“Hey, Coby. How’s the team doing?” Coby owns a professional baseball team. I think he did it to piss off his father, who’d had a shot at the pros but fucked himself out of a spot by getting addicted to drugs and alcohol. It only made him a miserable son of a bitch, and he took his failings out on his boys.

They both got even by getting out of dodge and making something of themselves. After Coby sold the gaming app he built, making him a billionaire a few times over, he had more than enough money to do what he wanted. And if pissing off his old man made him happy, then more power to him.

“They’re doing okay. Sitting in third place in our division right now. We’re playing in New York next month. Want tickets? I can meet you there.”

“Absolutely. So what’s up? You could have just emailed me the tickets.”

“Have you heard from Teddy?”

“Not recently, why?” Teddy is another member of the Sutherland Group, the band of kids I hung out with throughout grade school and high school. Some of us went to different colleges after that, but we stayed closer than most brothers. Always ready to drop everything and be there for one another when necessary.

“I’ve heard a rumor that Pat wants to sell the bar.”

I straighten in my desk chair. “What? Why?”

“I don’t know. That’s why I’m trying to connect with Teddy.”

We grew up in the back of that bar. Pat Sutherland provided a bunch of trouble-making gangly kids a safe place to hang out, shoot pool, play arcade games, listen to music, and talk. That was after we cleaned up the graffiti on his building. The markings we’d put there. The other business owners we harassed weren’t as accommodating or forgiving. Our parents never paid attention often enough to give a shit. Pat was the only one who did.

In that back room behind the bar, we did our homework, hung out, and had “I wish” conversations. We dreamed of one day becoming powerful, wealthy men with enough money to do whatever the fuck we wanted, when we wanted. We referred to ourselves as The Sutherland Group.

It was fantasy talk for everyone but me and Teddy. We came from money. I had a trust fund I tapped into at twenty-one. Money that helped me make loads more flipping real estate until I had enough to buy the hotel chain I renamed Fairchild.

“We can’t let that happen, Coby.” We all get together back in our hometown twice a year, and our first and last stop is always that bar. I can’t imagine it without Pat.

“I agree. I’ll keep trying Teddy and I’ll let you know what I find out.”

“Thanks.”

“Listen, I’ve got to go, but I’ll text you when the tickets are on their way.”

“Sounds good. Thanks for calling.”

The moment I hang up the phone my mind switches to Kaitlyn. Thinking her name sends a spark of hot desire through me. I urged her to shop or check out a museum or two today while I dealt with business, with a promise to spend the evening together. I plan to surprise her with theater tickets I purchased—a private box seat to one of the best shows in town after I take her to one of the most expensive restaurants in the city for dinner.

I grab my keys and wallet and head for the door. I have to meet my lawyer and accountant before we finalize the deal to purchase another hotel chain. But before I can open it, a thought occurs—maybe I should buy something nice for Kaitlyn and let her know I’m thinking of her. I consider the idea, debating it in my mind. I haven’t gone shopping in months, which would add a nice touch to the day. With that decided, I adjust my plans. My lawyer and accountant can wait.

My driver takes me to the nearest mall, where I wander aimlessly, unsure what I’m looking for, until I spot it—a small boutique tucked away in the corner. It’s filled with romantic, sensual lingerie, and I immediately know this is what I’m looking for. The minute I step into the store, an attractive sales woman appears all bright eyed and eager to help, but I politely shoo her away. I want the thrill of choosing something for Kaitlyn myself.

I take my time, carefully browsing through the racks and selecting items I think she might like. I let my hands float across the satiny fabric. I admire the delicate lace and silky bows. Once I find the perfect pieces, I take them up to the counter. The clerk wraps the lingerie in pink tissue paper and tucks the package into an elegant black box, tying it with a delicate ribbon.

As I leave the store, I can’t help but imagine what Kaitlyn will think when she opens this gift. Will it make her smile? Will she blush? The thought of her reaction has my lips stretching into a grin, and my cock stretching against my zipper.

The ride to the lawyer’s office is uneventful, but when I happen to glance at the review mirror, even from the back seat, I see that my eyes have a spark of excitement, something I don’t recall ever seeing before.

It’s Kaitlyn. These last few days have changed something inside me; I feel energized and alive, ready to take on whatever comes my way.

I quickly call Celeste and asked her to have bouquets of fresh flowers delivered to Kaitlyn’s room. When she returns from sightseeing, I want the room filled and fragrant. I want her to know she’s been on my mind since she asked me to help her with her luggage.

Finally, my meeting is over. It took longer than I would have preferred, but at least the deal will close sooner rather than later. I plan to overhaul the small hotel chain I just purchased, making them a more affordable, family-friendly version of the Fairchild.

When we return to the hotel, I ask my driver to deliver the present to my suite and I head straight to Kaitlyn’s room. She’d texted me to let me know she was heading back to shower and rest before our evening.I can’t wait to see her.

Even I can’t help but be amused by the spring in my step as I exit the elevator and stroll down the hall. Am I humming? I don’t hum.

I knock on the door, and it’s whipped open before I can pull back my hand. “Hi...hey, what’s wrong?”

I push my way into the room before she even has a chance to explain. Her face is pale. She’s trembling. There are tear tracks on her cheeks.
