Mason frowns. I guess he can already tell what Lisabell has to say isn’t good news.

“The cookies are a bust,” Madison states with a pout.

Lisabell smiles. “Obviously. So, here’s the thing,” she starts. “I won’t be coming over anymore. Your daddy’s going to get you another nanny.”

Mason’s frown deepens. He looks a lot like his dad when he frowns. “We don’t want another nanny,” he says slowly.

“I know you don’t, but sometimes things change,” Lisabell explains gently.

It’s odd seeing her like this. My best friend usually walks through life with prickly armor. We both do. I was surprised when she chose a career path that involved taking care of kids but she has flourished there. She has a softer side with kids.

“Things don’t have to change unless we want them to change,” Madison says assuredly. She’s trying to be a big girl but tears are already welling up in her eyes.

“Honey,” Lisabell says softly, “the world doesn’t work that way.”

“We get to choose how our world works,” Mason counters.

Okay, these are some kids with strong personalities.

“We want you and Julie to come over again,” Madison says.

I raise an eyebrow in surprise. “You want me to come over? I barely hung out with you guys.”

“Yeah, you didn’t seem to care about us all that much. It’s nice, considering who our daddy is.”

Oh. What the hell am I supposed to say to that?

I’m sorry I didn’t play with you? I don’t hang around kids all that much and I would have no idea what to do with you?

“Anyway,” Lisabell says, rerouting the conversation, “you’re going to have another nanny. And I’ll make sure she’s just as amazing as me.”

Madison looks like she’s about to cry. Mason just looks mad. Then someone clears their throat from the doorway of the room. It’s the British billionaire, Declan White. I wonder how long he has been standing there.

I don’t know much about him, except he’s a pretty big weirdo. And a playboy extraordinaire. Not that I can blame him. He’s hot. Blonde hair, blue eyes, rich, and he has an accent. I’m sure women are just falling at his feet.

“That won’t be necessary. The twins won’t need a new nanny,” he states.

“But Mr. Callahan said-”

He cuts me off. “Yes, I know what Alex said. But I wear the pants in our relationship and I say the twins’ nanny isn’t going to change.”

The pants in their relationship?

I give Lisabell a look and she shrugs like she doesn’t get it either. The twins seem appeased, though. Madison runs toward Mr. White.

“Uncle Declan, I got flour all over me,” she says with a giggle.

He stares down at the kid like she’s the most important thing in his world. picks her up without hesitation, dirtying his expensive shirt in the process.

“I can see that, munchkin. And how did it happen?” he questions.

“It was Mason,” she replies, pointing at her brother.

“Is that true, Ironman?”

Mason doesn’t reply. He looks from his uncle to us. “Is Lisabell really not going to have to leave?”

He definitely takes after his dad.
