Declan nods. “Have I ever lied to you?”

“Yes,” the kids reply simultaneously.

Declan rolls his eyes. “Well, I’m not lying now. Lisabell’s not going anywhere.”

Mason finally smiles and, after giving Lisabell a hug, he walks up to his uncle and sister.

“Who’s going to clean up this mess?” Declan questions, looking around the kitchen.

“Not us,” Madison pipes up.

“That’s presumptuous of you.”

“A maid can clean it up. Come on, Maddie. Let’s go play a game.”

His twin immediately slides down Declan’s body and they run out of the kitchen, dripping flour the entire way. There it is. The signature spoiled rich kid attitude. Good to know at least one thing is normal in this house.

“I’m sorry about Alex,” Declan states.

“Oh, it’s alright, Mr. White. We weren’t offended,” Lisabell says quickly.

What’s up with the deferential attitude?

Declan gives me an amused smile. “Your friend doesn’t seem to think so.”

Lisabell glares at me so hard, I immediately get the message.

“She’s right. We’re fine. Mr. Callahan was a bit rude but I never should have walked around his home like I did. It won’t happen again.”

It won’t. Because I’m never coming back here.

“Well, I can assure you my friend isn’t always so rude. You just caught him on a bad day.”

“Why do I have a feeling every day’s a bad day when it comes to him?”

Declan chuckles. “Yeah, I definitely like you.”

“Okay,” Lisabell interrupts, “we had better be leaving now. Thanks for saving my job, Mr. White.”

“Please, you can call me Declan. You both can.”

“Alright. Goodbye.”

Lisabell immediately hustles us out of the mansion and into her car. She lets out a deep breath once she’s behind the steering wheel.

“What was that?” I ask.

She starts the car. “What?”

“‘Oh, sorry, Mr. Callahan. Thank you, Mr. White. Would you like me to wipe your shoes?’” I mimic.

My best friend glares at me. “Shut the hell up, Juliette.”

“No really, that wasn’t you. You never take shit like that from anyone.”

Lisabell sighs before jamming her feet on the brakes and stopping the car just before we reach the front gate.

“What would you rather I did? Cause a scene? Yell at a man who helps to pay my bills? I need this job, Juliette. One of us has to have one.”
