Ouch.

She’s right, though. I’m acting pretty immature right now. The truth is that these people are rich and not on the same level as us. It would do me well to remember that.

“I’m sorry, Lisabell.”

“It’s fine. At least I still have the job,” she says, starting the car again. “I get it, okay. You had to take shit like that your entire life from people like Callahan. We both did. You can act out all you want when you’ve made your first million dollars and have all the success you want, Jules. Right now, we’re the underdogs, and sometimes, we’ve got to act like it.”

Jack, the hot security guy, walks up to the car. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, we’re fine. Just leaving,” Lisabell replies.

“Hope things didn’t go too badly? I tried to call you when Mr. Callahan arrived but your phone was dead.”

“Yeah, I forgot to charge it. But thanks for trying.”

“Alright. And will I be seeing you again?”

We both know he’s really asking if Lisabell got booted out.

“Yes, sure. Everything’s okay, Jack. Thanks.”

He gives her a little salute and a smile before walking to the gate and pressing a button to open it so Lisabell and I can drive off. I look back once and despite everything that’s happened today, a part of me is still curious about the billionaire that lives in the mansion. And his weird little family.

CHAPTER4

Xander

“Hey Dad,” Mason greets, walking up to me while I drink my cup of coffee.

There’s a bashful look on his face that immediately makes me suspicious. I drop my cup and phone on the table and face him, giving him my undivided attention.

“Hey, Mase.”

“So, don’t get mad,” he begins, and I shake my head.

“That depends on what you have to say.”

“If you’re going to get mad, then I might as well not say it,” he counters.

“I’m guessing the reason you’re coming to tell me is because either you need my help with something or you need me to do something for you.”

He shrugs and I’m drawn to his shoulders. He has gotten so big in the past few months. It almost feels like he’s grown up when I haven’t been watching. It causes a pang in my heart.

“No, if you’re just going to get mad at me, then I might as well find another solution. One that will have a more favorable outcome.”

I smile, leaning back into my chair and crossing my arms over my chest. I taught him that. And it’s nice that he was paying attention. Mason tends to act like me a lot. He’s dependable, responsible, and he takes care of his sister. Not to mention they’re both extremely intelligent. I realize everyone thinks their kids are the next Einstein but Mason and Madison are smarter than most other children, like I’ve been told many times at parent-teacher conferences.

“And where exactly would that other solution be?”

“Uncle Declan,” he replies.

Right—their crazy, annoying godfather.

“Alright, fine, let’s make a deal. The punishment will fit the crime.”

He immediately shakes his head full of brown curls. “No deal.”

I laugh. “I’ll dial the punishment back twenty percent.”
