“Okay, Daddy.” She gives me a hug. “I love you.”

My heart practically melts. I get on one knee so I can hug her better. “I love you too.”

CHAPTER5

Madison

“Ineed your help,” are the first words that greet me when I open my eyes in the morning.

I groan. “Lisabell, if someone didn’t die, then please get the fuck out of my room.”

“Okay, first off, rude. Extremely rude. It’s my house you’re staying at.”

“You’re never going to let me forget that, are you?” I mumble.

“Not likely,” she replies. “Now, open your eyes. And listen to me.”

“What? What is it? It’s eight a.m. and I want to sleep.”

Lisabell raises an eyebrow. “Up until a few months ago, you were part of the ninety percent of adults in Virginia who had a reason to wake up by six so they could get to their respective workplaces on time.”

“Well, my reason went up in flames, so excuse me if sleep is the only thing I’ve got left.”

Lisabell falls silent for a few seconds, prompting me to look at her.

“How was the job interview yesterday?” she questions.

“According to my interviewer, I don’t have the necessary qualifications for a chef in their stupid, classy, five-star restaurant. He did try to offer me the job of a nutritionist though, to, you know, soften the blow. I turned him down,” I say on a sigh. “Do you think I should have taken it?”

“No, that would be selling yourself short. You belong in the kitchen, Jules.”

“At this rate, I might as well go work at a McDonald’s or something.”

“I hear the Subway on the next street is hiring,” Lisabell suggests with a smile.

I throw a pillow at her. “Not helping.”

“I know, I know. I might have something that might cheer you up,” she starts.

I perk up at that. “I’m listening.”

“So, here’s the thing, I need your help. I got double booked today. An important client needs me to come over this evening, but I have to head over to the Mackintoshes.”

“And this concerns me how?” I question.

“Could you please go over to the other client’s place? I promise you won’t hate it. The kids are great.”

I’m already laughing before she completes her statement. “You’re joking, right.”

“Do I look like I’m joking? Come on, Jules, please. I wouldn’t ask if this wasn’t an emergency.”

“Just tell your agency to send someone else to the client’s place.”

“I can’t. Or we can’t, rather. He won’t let anyone else watch his kids. And the kids adore me so they wouldn’t want anyone else.”

“What makes you think they would want me?”

“Because they’ve met you before and they like you,” she replies.
