My eyes widen at that. “You mean…? No way,” I quickly say.

“Yes, way.”

“I’m not doing it, Lisabell. No fucking way. Not after the way their father treated me.”

“You probably won’t even see him. Also, he’ll be made aware that you’re replacing me today.”

“And you think he’ll allow it,” I say, wondering if there are a few screws loose in her head.

We’ve established the fact that Alexander Callahan is a dick and he definitely does not like me. And the feeling is mutual.

“He will. I’ll make sure of it.”

“No need because I’m not going.”

“You’ll get paid.”

My eyes narrow. She knows exactly how to get to me.

“How much are we talking?”

By the time she says the price, my mouth is hanging open and I’m agreeing to go the Callahans’ later in the evening. Hell, in my current financial state, I would have agreed to do anything for that amount of money.

“Doyou guys want to watchSpongeBobor something?” I ask, after an eternity of silence.

I arrived at the mansion about 30 minutes ago and it’s been awkward to say the least. At first, the twins were pretty excited to see me, especially Madison. They were a bit bummed that Lisabell didn’t come along, but I passed along her deepest regrets. Now we’re all in one of the living rooms in their ginormous house, trying to figure out how to pass the time.

“We’re not five,” Mason states in his prim, proper, responsible Mason way.

I give him a small smile.

“Of course not. You’re too tall for a five-year-old.”

He rolls his eyes.Ass.

“Also,” I add, “even adults watchSpongeBobso I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“We usually do our homework once we get back from school,” Madison says just as Mason opens his mouth to respond to me.

“Homework…great. As long as it’s not math, I’ve got you,” I say, grinning.

“You don’t like math either?” Madison asks, her hazel eyes widening.

“Nope. How about you, Mason?”

He sniffs, “I like math.”

I nod. Of course he does.

“You’re a weird kid, Mason Callahan.”

“You’re a weird adult, Juliette-” He pauses. “What’s your last name?”

“I’m not telling,” I say on a laugh.

The kid shrugs, “I’ll find out eventually.”
