“Are kids even allowed to watch that?”

They both nod simultaneously although I’m not sure I believe them. But I’ll be right beside them and if there are any uncomfortable scenes, I can just switch it off.

“Alright, fine. Where are we going?”

“We could watch it in the cinema room?” Mason suggests.

“Let’s just watch it in the living room down here,” Madison counters.

“I agree with Maddie.”

“Fine,” Mason says sourly.

I make us some popcorn and we all pile into the living room to watch our shows.

“This show is actually pretty good,” I say before realizing that both kids have fallen asleep.

Madison’s head is in my lap and Mason’s right next to me, cuddling his empty popcorn plate. Adorable.

I manage to manouvre them both into comfortable positions prior to heading into the kitchen for a drink. I check my phone on the way and realize it’s already quite late. I’m supposed to leave by 9 and it’s already 7:30 p.m.

“They convinced you to watchStranger Things?” someone asks as soon as I enter the kitchen.“Holy shit!” I yell, clutching my chest.

I almost drop my phone out of fright. I turn to the person standing behind the shiny marble countertop.

Alexander Callahan gives me a very unamused look. “Please tell me you don’t swear like that in front of my kids.”

Five seconds and he’s already judging. Perfect.

“I didn’t swear like that in front of your kids,” I say icily. “Also, according to them, they’re allowed to swear sometimes in the house.”

“They are,” he agrees, nodding his head. “It helps to discourage them from making a habit out of it. Why do you think kids grow up to swear so much? It’s because they were forbidden from doing so earlier in life. It makes it more appealing. I’m simply removing the appeal.”

“That’s actually kind of smart,” I mumble.

“I’m a smart man, Miss Landers.”

I take in his general appearance. He’s wearing a light blue dress shirt. His dark hair is disheveled, like he has been pulling on it all day. He looks tired, although not any less handsome. I hate that I’m always noticing how good-looking he is.

I also notice that the edge in his eyes I saw the last time is gone. They’re calmer now, more at ease, which surprises me a little.

“You’re eating ice cream,” I say, eyes wide when I take in the bowl in front of him.

“Mint chocolate chip, to be exact. Why? Am I not allowed?”

I gag at the flavor. People who like that shit deserve jail. “How old are you again?”

He raises a dark eyebrow. “I wasn’t aware there were age restrictions when it came to drinking ice cream. And I am not old, Miss Landers.”

“Stop calling me that,” I say. “My name’s Juliette.”

“Seeing as this is our second meeting, I prefer to continue referring to you in a formal manner.”

I wrinkle my nose. “You have a weird way of talking, Mr. Callahan.”

“I could say the same for you,” he retorts, although I notice his lips twitch a little.

I lean against the countertop on the other side. “You seem like you’re in a good mood.”
