He nods. “I am. I just got the approval on an important business proposal.”

“Good for you.”

There’s an awkward silence for a beat before he breaks it.

“Thank you for watching the kids today.”

“Oh, it’s no problem. They’re pretty low maintenance and you’re paying me. I should be thanking you.”

He raises an eyebrow like he’s waiting for something.

“What?” I ask.

“You said you should be thanking me. I’m expecting the thanks.”

“I’ll say it when I want to,” I retort.

He smiles softly before shaking his head. “I have a feeling things are never easy with you.”

“You’ll just have to see, Mr. Callahan.”

“Xander. You can call me Xander.”

“What, no more formality?”

“I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing more of each other. And I don’t particularly dislike talking to you.”

“I’m honored,” I tell him. I even throw in a little bow. “In that case, you can call me Julie. Or Jules. Whichever you prefer.”

“I prefer Juliette,” he states. “It’s a pretty name.”

Oh, God.

There is absolutely no reason why that statement should be causing me to blush. My cheeks heat and I really hope he doesn’t notice.

I clear my throat. “Thanks.”

“And I apologize. For the other day,” he clarifies. “I’m not usually such an asshole.”

I shrug. “That remains to be seen.” He gives me a small smile at that. “I’m sorry, too. For walking into that room. I shouldn’t have intruded like that.”

“It’s alright.”

He goes back to eating his ice cream and is enjoying it so much, I’m a little tempted to ask him if he had any other flavors but he beats me to it.

“What flavor do you want?” he questions, walking toward a glass door. He slides it open and pulls out a bowl.

“Strawberry please,” I reply with a smile. He opens the freezer and grabs the ice cream, sliding it over to me on the other side. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Just don’t tell the kids.”

Soon enough, we’re talking about his kids over ice cream. And I have to admit, it’s the nicest conversation I’ve had with anyone in a long time. He actually gets me and my weirdness seems amusing to him. He doesn’t smile a lot but Alexander Callahan might actually be a good person.

CHAPTER6

Xander

“So, you’re currently living with Ms. Hugo?” I question.
