“Yeah, Lisabell offered graciously to take me in when I found myself in a bit of a pickle.”

I’m curious about what pickle it is she’s alluding to but I also don’t want to pry. It’s none of my business. Her expression does turn a little sad and I’m immediately grasping for something to say to distract her and keep her mind occupied. Her smile is resplendent and I don’t want to see her stop.

“What do you like to do for fun? You’re young, I’m sure you’ll have something interesting. What are your hobbies?”

It’s not often I do anything out of the ordinary but I keep surprising myself this night. I’m taking time to actually talk to this woman and it’s not bad. Not in the slightest. She’s funny and smart and a little sassy, but it’s nice regardless.

“Does sleeping count?” she asks with a glint in her pretty blue eyes.

I give her an unimpressed look.

“I’m serious.” She laughs. “I really do like to sleep, anytime that I can. Apart from that and cooking, I don’t do much else with my time.”

“You and Madison must get along splendidly.”

“Yeah, she mentioned she’s a fellow sleeper. How about you? Hobbies?”

I shrug. “Does working count?”

She smiles. “See, you give me shit about sleeping, but your hobby is much more depressing.”

“I’m not really sure about that, Juliette.”

“At least my hobby involves something that doesn’t require any physical exertion.”

“Some scientists would disagree with you. There has been research alluding to the fact that we do exert some energy when we sleep.”

“Yeah, that doesn’t concern me. Sleep is the only time all my problems ever really go away. There’s nothing that’s going to ruin sleep for me.”

I smile. “Good for you. But you’ve got to give me something better than sleeping as a hobby. Reading, for instance?” I suggest.

“Nope. I can’t stand novels. I’m not a big fan.”

I shake my head.

“You can’t judge,” she says, pointing her spoon at me. “Your hobby is literally your job.”

“Yes, but I also like to swim on occasion. Or take a walk, run. That kind of thing.”

She makes a face. “I can’t swim. And running involves physical exertion.”

I lean on the counter and stare straight at her. “You do realize the only thing I’m getting from this conversation is that you’re kind of lazy.”

She gasps and places her hand on her chest. “You do realize, I don’t really care.”

I laugh. “You’re quite prickly, aren’t you?”

“Are you kidding? I have an amazing, sunny personality.”

“I’ll believe that when I see it.”

She checks her phone and her eyes widen. “Oh, shit, it’s getting pretty late. I had better leave.”

“You drove here, right?” I question.

“Yeah. You didn’t notice the white Honda Civic parked at the front of your house?” she questions, rolling her eyes.

“Actually no. It’s quite small. I probably didn’t see it from the front seat of my BMW,” I retort.
