My gaze is fixed on my coffee. “What are you talking about?” I ask.

“Cut the shit. Did you really just bar me from driving into your house at will?”

I shrug. “It’s a security issue, Declan.”

He shakes his head. “You’re such an ass.”

There’s no response to that and he takes that as a cue to move on to another subject.

“I heard on the grapevine that a particular beautiful, blue-eyed babysitter came over to babysit two days ago.”

“Juliette’s not a babysitter,” I say simply. “And you need to stop gossiping with my kids.”

“Oh, we’re on a first-name basis now. So, what’s going on between you two?”

I give him an unamused look. “Nothing. She came over to my house to watch my kids, and I paid her for the service. Stop acting like a fucking teenager and find something better to do.” And with that, I walk out of the kitchen.

Of course, he follows me.

“I’m not acting like a teenager. This is the first woman in five fucking years whose name you’ve actually bothered to learn.”

I turn back to look at him. “How do you know we had a conversation?”

“The kids. They woke up and heard you talking in the kitchen.”

“We had a conversation. And I’m not sure why that matters, or why they’re telling you about it.”

“I think they’re hoping you and Juliette end up dating. I can’t say I don’t want the same.”

I stop short and give him a look. “You’re delusional. And the kids really shouldn’t be getting any ideas like that.”

Honestly, it’s a little worrying.

“What? Give me one reason why you can’t at least try with her. She’s pretty, she seems nice.”

“I’ll give you three. I’m at least ten years older than her. I’ve only met her twice. And I have no fucking interest.”

“You’re thirteen years older than her, to be exact. And I don’t see how that’s a problem. She’s an adult.”

I lean against the wall and raise an eyebrow. “How do you know her exact age?”

He smirks. “I may have run a full background check on her. Family, school, everything.”

I groan. “Declan, that’s an invasion of privacy.”

In addition to being the founder of one of the biggest banks in Virginia, Declan also owns an elite security company. They take care of bodyguards, security alarms, anything technological that has to do with people’s safety. I know for a fact he has at least one or two hackers in his employment, which means he has access to a wealth of information. My best friend would make a pretty terrifying enemy, which is why I’m glad to have him on my side.

“I had to make sure this new person entering your life was legit.”

“And is she? What did you find?” I ask curiously.

“Well, first off, Ms. Juliette Landers isn’t all that she seems. Her life’s not going too well right now but she has been living fine. She didn’t go to college, instead choosing to attend a culinary school. As for her family life, well, that’s a mess.”

“What’s wrong with her family life?”

He’s being so unnecessarily vague.

“You can ask her yourself. I can’t really divulge her entire life story to you.”
