“No, Mads, I’m saying it’s hot in here,” Lisabell swiftly replies.

“It’s like 80 degrees in here,” Mason drawls.

“Shut up and watch your show,” she grumbles.

He rolls his eyes but the both of them do as she says. Lisabell turns to me.

“What was that?” she whispers.

“What?”

“You were practically salivating back there.”

“I was not,” I say unconvincingly.

“Okay.”

I get the message. She doesn’t believe me but she’s willing to let it go until we’re in the safety of our home. Two minutes later, I get to my feet.

“I need to get some water,” I announce.

“Could you please bring me some?” Madison asks.

“Sure, sweetie.”

I don’t miss Lisabell’s stare as I walk out of the living room. Thankfully, Xander’s still in the kitchen when I get there.

“We have got to stop meeting like this.”

He gives me a barely-there smile in reply.

I frown. “Did I do something wrong?”

“What makes you think that?”

“You’ve been acting weird. I thought we broke down the barrier a few days ago but now it’s hellos and goodbyes and awkward greetings.”

He leans against the sink as he stares at me. His eyes are the opposite of calm right now. They're like twin pools of dark chocolate, emphasis on the dark.

“Juliette, we’re not friends.”

My eyes widen. “Wow, okay.”

I hadn’t been expecting him to start calling me his bestie or buy me flowers but his statement still stings. He didn’t have to be so blunt.

“I know that,” I say through gritted teeth.

“Do you really? Because if you’re expecting anything out of this relationship, it’s not going to happen. You’re my children’s babysitter. Not my friend, not my anything.”

“I’m not your children’s babysitter, Lisabell is,” I say icily. “I’ve only been accompanying her because I quite like your kids. Wish I could say the same for you, asshole.”

And with that, I turn around to walk out of the kitchen.

“Wait,” he says on a sigh. He walks over and stands in front of me, barring me from leaving the kitchen.

It isn’t until he’s standing right in front of me that I realize how much taller than me he is. I’m 5’8”, which is pretty tall for a woman, Xander has to be at least 6’3”. The man is a giant.

“How may I help you, Mr. Callahan?”
