“Africa? I question in shock. “When the hell did you get to Africa?!”
“About a month ago.”
He’s sounding way too calm for a man that’s about to be a dead man.
“Come home, Asher. Right now.”
“You can’t make me,” he says immediately.
“Actually, I can. Who’s funding your little adventure? Me. Who gave you the little black card you’ve been making use of the past few months?”
“Alright, I got it. Threats are beneath you, Xander.”
“I can assure you, they’re not. You’re coming back to America.”
He goes silent for a full minute while I wait.
“I can’t,” he finally says. “At least not yet.”
“Asher,” I say in a low voice.
“I’ll come back home in a few weeks,” he promises.
“Make sure to be back here before the party,” I tell him.
“We’re still doing that?” he questions drily.
My eyes narrow. “Yes, you twit. We’re still doing that. I’ll email you the invitation. If you even check your email anymore.”
“I’ll be there,” he states. “So, what’s been going on with you?” My mind flashes to Juliette.
“No,” I grumble.
“And how are my little brother and sister?”
I relax in my seat. “They’re good. They miss you. Try to call them too if you can.”
“I’ll try.”
“Asher, do not go quiet on me like that again. Do you understand me? I expect a call every week.”
“That’s a bit excessive.”
“I don’t give a fuck.”
“Alright, fine. I’ll call you every week… ish. Geez, the only reason I haven’t called in so long is because I lost my last phone while I was climbing a mountain in Europe, and I just had the chance to get another one.”
“Whatever you say.”
“I’ll be fine, Xander.”
I tried to detect even a hint of any lies in his voice. If Asher was in any kind of trouble, he wouldn’t tell me shit. He considers himself a burden to me and no matter how many times I try to tell him and convince him he’s family, he seems to prefer ostracization. I would hate for anything to happen to him. Especially now that he’s on the other side of the world.
“You had better. Take care of yourself, man.”
“I will. And Xander?”
“Yeah?”
