She waves me off. “I’ll be fine,” she says sleepily.

Her eyes are a little red, although I’m not sure if it’s from swimming or her looming cold. She also looks tired. With a sigh, I get to my feet and pull her into my arms, hooking my hands under her legs. She yelps.

“What are you doing?”

She holds onto me, wrapping her arms around my neck.

“Getting you into bed before your cold gets worse.”

“I can walk,” she protests, trying to pull away.

“Stay put, Juliette,” I say through gritted teeth. It’s already hard enough for me as it is, being so close to her.

“You’re acting like a grizzly bear,” she huffs.

We run into the kids on the way, and I still in my steps.

“What’s going on?” Mason asks, staring at me and the woman in my arms.

This is an awkward situation. And I don’t particularly like the glint in Madison’s eyes right now. I can’t get away with much when it comes to them.

“Juliette has a cold. I was simply taking her into bed so she can get warm,” I explain.

“Why were you even swimming in the first place?” he asks inquisitively. “It’s pretty chilly out there, Dad.”

“I realize that. Now quit grilling me,” I tell him.

Juliette is completely silent in my arms. Right now, she seems to be inspecting the ceiling.

“Should we call the chef to make some soup? Soup always helps whenever I catch a cold,” Madison suggests.

“That’s a great idea, princess. Call him now,” I tell her.

They both run to their rooms while Juliette and I head to one of the empty bedrooms in the house. I would have taken her to mine, but I don’t want to confuse my kids any more than I have today. I’m sure they have questions regarding mine and Juliette’s relationship, but the truth is simply that nothing’s going on. Even though a part of me wants something to be going on.

“You know you’re overreacting, right?” Juliette asks, once she has changed out of her wet clothes. I tuck her back into bed.

“Nope,” I reply.

“I’m fine. I can go rest at my own house.”

“You can rest just fine here.”

She lets out a noise of protest and I think she’s going to argue again but she lets out a small yawn.

“Fine, but only because I’m really sleepy right now.”

A few seconds later and she’s out like a light. I brush a few strands of hair out of her face. I’m unable to resist placing a small kiss on her forehead before exiting the room and letting her sleep.

I’m definitely in dangerous territory right now.

CHAPTER11

Juliette

“Do you want to get punched in the face?”

Xander’s voice is first thing I hear after I wake up. With a groan, I sit up and rub my forehead. My head hurts like a bitch. At least my nose isn’t congested, but my throat is a little scratchy. I’ve had worse colds.
