“I just want to see,” a voice that I’ve come to recognize as Declan White’s says excitedly.

“No. Fuck off, man,” Xander says gruffly. “She’s asleep and I’ll kill you if you wake her up.”

Declan falls silent for a while. And then he starts to laugh. I hear Xander’s deep sigh.

“What the hell is so funny?”

“You, my friend. You’re so funny.”

“I’m not even going to question that right now. Leave.”

“Nah, I think I’ll stick around. I’ll be with the kids in their game room.”

I hear his footsteps as he walks away and after a minute, Xander enters the room. He pauses when he sees me awake.

“Shit, did we wake you?” he asks.

I shake my head. “No, you didn’t. What time is it?”

My phone isn’t anywhere around me.

“A few minutes after 11 p.m.,” Xander replies.

My eyes widen.

“Oh no. I was asleep for over five hours.”

“Yeah, I was going to wake you up soon so you could have dinner.”

“Lisabell’s probably so worried,” I state, getting to my feet.

I feel off-balance as soon as I do. Xander rushes to my side and sets me down on the bed.

“Easy. You had a slight fever earlier. You were checked out by the doctor and he said you’ll be fine. He said you might have caught some bug, though.”

“A doctor came over?” I ask incredulously.

“Yeah, about 2 hours ago when you started to run a fever. I was worried so I called the family doctor.”

I give him a grateful smile. “You didn’t have to.”

“I texted Lisabell too and told her you were here. You should probably call her.”

He hands me my phone and I dial my best friend’s number.

“Hey, Bells,” I say when she picks up.

“Jules, what the hell happened?”

“I think I’m sick,” I inform her.

“You think? According to Mr. Callahan, you’ve been out of it for five hours. And you sound so weak. I can’t believe you thought it was okay to swim in the cold when you weren’t feeling well,” she scolds.

“I was feeling fine. I mean, I suppose I was a little under the weather but I thought I was just stressed.”

“Alright, fine. You’re sleeping over there, right?”

“I’m not sure. It’s pretty late but I can probably still drive home,” I say unsurely.
