“Cute kid,” I say on a sniff.

Declan chuckles. Xander shakes his head.

“Get him to bed. Or he’ll be too tired tomorrow from playing all night,” he tells Declan.

“He can sleep in. Tomorrow’s Sunday.”

Xander glares at his friend until he gets the message and leaves the kitchen.

“Your soup,” Xander says, pointing at the plate in front of me.

“So bossy,” I say, shaking my head.

He gives me an unimpressed look and I promptly start eating. He doesn’t say a word until I’m done. Then he produces some pills and a cup of water. I take the drugs and down all the water in the cup.

“There, happy?”

“Much,” he agrees. “How was the soup?”

“It was okay. Not as good as mine but I can’t complain,” I tell him.

I literally just woke up from a five-hour nap but I’m sleepy again.

“Which brings me to my next point. I have a proposition for you.”

“What proposition?”

“A job offer,” he states.

“No,” I say shaking my head. “You’ve done enough.”

“Just trust me There is a job that you’re more than qualified for that I think you’d enjoy.”

“What job?” I ask curiously.

“The head chef at my hotel.”

“Your hotel,” I repeat.

“Yes, Juliette. As you know, it’s a five-star hotel and the best one in the city. But I’ve had a few complaints about the food, and it’s been bothering me for a while. You can help with that.”

“Isn’t that nepotism? If I actually took the job, which I won’t, all the other employees would hate me.”

“It’s not nepotism and they’ll eventually see that you’re capable enough for the job.”

“So let me get this straight. First, you offered me a job as your kids’ nanny, while also allowing me to live here in your house. And now you’re offering me a job at your hotel?”

“Basically,” he says with a nod.

“That’s too much.”

“It’s not. This is a tactical decision, Juliette.”

“Why me? And don’t say anything about it being a tactical decision or anything like that.”

He shrugs. Our eyes meet, and our gazes hold. “Maybe it’s because I know how special you are. And a part of me is worried you’ll take Lisabell up on her offer.”

Her offer. Her offer to move with her to L.A. Xander doesn’t want me to go.
