She scoffs. “Excuse you?”

“You heard me the first time. Get out,” I repeat icily.

“No, I don’t think I will. Not until you apologize for assaulting me.”

She has got to be fucking kidding me.

I move closer until I’m right in front of her. She’s shorter than me and has to incline her head to continue glaring at me. I admire her resilience but if she doesn’t get the fuck out, I’m going to do something I’ll regret.

Then she gasps and realization floods her eyes as she takes an involuntary step back.

“Holy shit. You’re Alexander Callahan.”

I’m not surprised she recognized me. Anyone who’s anyone in Virginia knows who I am.

“And you’re in my house right now without an invite. I’m this close to calling the cops, so you had better start taking now.”

“There’s absolutely no reason to call the cops,” she states, apparently getting over her shock.

“Says the trespasser.”

She gasps. “Listen, I understand that this is your house and you technically don’t know me, but that’s a pretty bold assumption.”

I shake my head. “You had better start explaining yourself before I call security.”

Her eyes widen and she looks around nervously. It’s then I remember where we are and I move closer to her. With each step I take toward her, she takes one back until I’ve pushed her to the doorway. I help her out the rest of the way and shut the door behind me.

My heart is racing and I was only in the room for a few minutes. There’s a reason it’s closed off; I did not need the onslaught of memories that just flooded my mind.

I turn back to the trespasser. I can see her better in the light. She’s a beautiful woman, mid-length brown hair, stunning blue eyes. Judging by the way she’s dressed, she belongs nowhere in this house or in my world. I’ve never seen her before in my life.

“Who the hell are you?”

The sound of someone munching on chips distracts us both and keeps her from answering the question. We both turn to see Declan standing in the middle of the hallway.

“Did you just come out of that room?” he asks me in surprise. He reaches into the bag of chips and pulls one out. I take a deep breath as I watch him shove it into his mouth.

“Declan, call security,” I tell him.

“And why should I do that?”

“This woman snuck into my house.” I gesture at the brunette that’s staring at both of us like we’re alien species.

“Xander, do I really have to tell you that’s impossible considering this place has almost as much security as the White House? And I mean both the actual White House and my white house a few blocks away.”

Fucking idiot.

I glare at him. “Then how the hell did she get in here?”

“Would you stop talking about me like I’m not in front of you?” the woman snaps.

I turn to look at her and raise an eyebrow. Considering she’s in a world of trouble, I’m surprised by her spunk. It’s not every day someone breaks into your house and acts so high and mighty.

Interesting.
