“Fuck, Asher, I’m sorry,” I start to say. He cuts me off with a punch to my jaw and my head snaps to the side.

Juliette gasps.

“Screw you. Screw both of you,” Asher says then walks away.

“Fuck,” Juliette whispers from behind me and I turn to look at her.

“I’m sorry he punched you,” Juliette says guiltily.

“I’m a big boy, Firefly. I can take it. And I think I deserved a punch.”

Regardless of whether or not it was intentional, in his eyes, I’m practically stealing away the woman he’s in love with.

“I didn’t mean to hurt him,” she says as her eyes fill with tears.

“Hey, no.” I pull her into my arms and run my hands through her hair. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Asher’s pissed right now but he’ll come around. He’s family, we’ll get through this.”

“He probably hates me now,” she mumbles against my chest.

“It’ll be okay,” I assure her, trying to soothe her with my touch.

She lets out a breath before pulling away. “Go. You have a plane to catch.”

A smile tugs at my lips. “Actually, I have my own private jet so I don’t have to leave unless I want to.”

She mumbles something about rich people under her breath as I pull her closer. “You still need to go. I’m sure whatever business you have to do in France is important.”

“You wanna come along?” I ask without hesitation but she shakes her head.

“I have work. People already think I only got the job because I’m sleeping with you—there’s no need to prove them right,” she says sadly.

A sigh escapes my lips and worry tugs at me when I see the expression on her face.

“I don’t want to leave while you’re upset.”

“I’ll be fine, Xander. I promise.”

She leans up to press a kiss against my lips and despite really not wanting to, I turn away from her and head up to my room to get ready for my trip.

“If any reportereven dares to print a single malicious word about Juliette, I’ll sue them with all my goddamn might until they’re run out of business,” I growl over the phone.

“Understood, sir,” my lawyer says then hangs up the phone.

I throw the phone onto the passenger seat before starting up my car. I just got back to Richmond after three days and although everything in me is screaming for me to go home and see the kids and Juliette, I have somewhere else to be first.

I arrive at my destination and park my car prior to walking up to the door of the black and white condo and ringing the doorbell. Asher snarls as soon as he opens the door.

“What are you doing here? How did you even know I was here?” he questions.

“Hello to you too, son,” I reply.

I asked someone to help me track him down and they informed me he was at a condo I bought for him when he turned twenty. His eyes harden.

“I’m not your son. And if I was, don’t you think it would be weird that you’re fucking a woman I used to date?”

“Be really careful how you talk about Juliette, Ash. I came here to have a civil conversation. And you’re right. You’re not my son. You’re Kathy’s son, but she was my wife and I owe it to her to take care of you. Now, can I come in?” I ask again.
