“It’ll be okay.”

A laugh escapes me at that. “Somehow, I doubt that.”

“Come on, Jules. It’s Alexander Callahan. That man worships the ground you walk on. I saw it myself."

Xander had flown me to L.A. a week ago to see her for a day. It was amazing.

“How can you be so sure? I don’t know if he even wants kids. And this relationship is still so new.”

“You’ve been together for almost two months,” Lisabell points out.

“Yeah, and I’ve probably been pregnant those two months,” I mutter.

She gasps. “You’ve been pregnant for two months?”

“I don’t know, Lisabell,” I confess. “But that was when he and I first had sex, and after that, I got on birth control so I don’t know. Oh God, Lisabell, if I really have been pregnant since then, would the birth control harm the baby? Shit, shit, shit.”

“Julie, breathe,” my friend says soothingly. “You’re going to get through this.”

She’s right. I will get through this. Even though I never planned to get pregnant until my career was properly founded and I had finally achieved my goals. I’m not even close to buying a building, let alone establishing a restaurant. Heck, I don’t even have a house. I suggested moving out, Xander threatened to tie me up to the bed and I let the matter die.

“This is such a mess,” I cry.

“I know, Julie. Do you want me to come over for a while? I think I can get a few days off work,” she says and I’ve never loved her more.

“Could you? I need you.”

I don’t even care that I sound desperate, I really do need my best friend.

“I’ll be there, Julie. Don’t worry,” she assures me.

We talk for a few more minutes before she has to go. I hang up and steel myself before driving to the mansion. It’ll all be okay.

I drive around the fountain in the middle of the driveway before parking. I’m about to get down when the twins come racing toward the car, wearing swimwear. I roll the window down as they approach the door.

“What’s going on here?” I ask, arching an eyebrow.

Madison smiles. “We were hoping you could take us to the pool on the other street. It’s Sunday but hopefully it’s not too busy. I like swimming alone and Mason does too.”

“There’s a pool in the house,” I point out.

“It’s not as deep as that one. One of my friends was bragging about swimming there all the time and I want to be able to say I went too,” she argues.

I sigh. “Do you guys really have to go?”

“Yes. We would ask Jack to drive us but he went out with Daddy. Come on, Julie. Please, please.”

They really need a lesson on accepting no for an answer. But I doubt I’d be able to teach them. One look at Madison’s adorable hazel eyes and I find myself caving. I turn to her twin, who is silent behind her.

“You okay, Mase?” I ask and he nods, although he doesn’t look excited at the thought of going swimming.

“Alright, fine, let’s go,” I tell them,

I can contemplate my life as I watch them splash around in the water. Mason gives me directions and I drive them to the two-story building that seems to house their special pool. When Madison mentioned a neighborhood pool, this wasn’t quite what I was envisioning, but it was built for the rich so I shouldn’t be too surprised. We sign in at the front desk and are directed to the pool. I get a text from Xander asking where we are and I quickly reply.

“Woah, that looks deep,” I say as I take in the large expanse of water in the middle of the room.

“We can handle it,” Mason says, shrugging.
