Damn.

My vision starts to blur when I hear a loud splash and a strong body grabs me. My eyes latch onto those gorgeous brown eyes.

Xander.

His firm hands reach me and he starts pulling me out of the water. I gasp as we reach the surface, coughing out water, while trying to breathe some air into my burning lungs. Someone helps me out and I lie by the pool struggling to breathe. Xander appears beside me, his eyes wide with concern.

“I’m okay,” I manage to say.

He nods once before his eyes latch on his kids. Madison’s arms are around her brother as he walks toward us slowly. He seems to be okay. There’s a towel around his body and he’s shivering.

Xander pulls both of them into his arms and I see him visibly relax. He must have been terrified. The lifeguard begins mumbling apologies from beside me. I sit up and glare at him as he hands me a towel, and Xander as well.

“What the hell happened?!” Xander snaps.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” Mason rasps.

Xander reaches forward to touch his forehead.

“You’re burning up, fuck!”

“I thought I was alright to swim. But I feel so weak and tired.”

I get to my feet and move closer. Mason looks up at me with apology shining in his hazel eyes.

“I’m sorry, Mase. I should have been watching you,” I tell him, as I pull him to my chest, hugging him tight. “Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?”

“We’re going home!” Xander says before Mason can reply, his voice deathly calm.

When I look at him, there’s anger in his expression and he doesn’t meet my eyes. I’m still fucking terrified. If anything had happened to Mason, I don’t know what I would have done.

My baby.

I resist the urge to press my hand to my stomach. I’m sure the baby’s fine. I wasn’t in the water for long and I feel alright now, except for the exhaustion creeping into my bones. Still, this baby has been through so much and I really need to get checked out at a hospital.

“Don’t we need to get Mason to the hospital?” I ask the man that’s practically vibrating with fury.

“I’ll call the doctor to the house to check on both of you,” he replies. He still doesn’t meet my eye.

“He doesn’t need to check on me, I feel fine,” I immediately say.

I don’t think the doctor would tell him if he found out I was pregnant but I can’t be too sure. I really want to tell him on my own terms.

“Let’s go,” Xander says again.

We all follow him out of the building. At the reception desk, Xander stops to talk to the woman in charge.

“Fire that asshole,” he growls. His voice is resolute, firm, and the woman behind the desk doesn’t even question him. She nods while calling out apologies of her own.

I turn to look at the lifeguard, who had been trailing behind us. I can’t say he doesn’t deserve it. He really fucked up today. We leave the building and head home in complete silence.

As soon as we enter the house, Xander takes Mason to his room to tuck him in and make sure he’s alright. Madison follows, while I head up to my room. I need a shower. It’ll help me calm down and arrange my thoughts.

I’m putting on clean and dry clothes when Xander stalks into the room. He still looks pissed.

“How is he?” I ask, referring to Mason.

“He’ll be fine. The doctor said he just has to rest. Mase is asleep now. Madison’s with him.”
