“About bloody time,” he states.

“You’re a pain in my ass,” I start as I stalk toward the door. “But you’re also a damn good friend.”

I close the door behind me and his laughter flows through it as I head down to the garage floor of my company and into my car. I drive towards my hotel, it’s 12 p.m., which means she’s probably still at work. My mind whirs as I think of exactly what I’m going to say to her.

The manager of the hotel, John, walks up to me as soon as I step in.

“Good afternoon, sir. I’m assuming you heard what happened,” he says.

I arch an eyebrow in confusion.

“What happened?”

His mouth presses into a firm line. “Miss Landers passed out while working. She was taken to the hospital an hour ago.”

My eyes widen as he completes that sentence. “Which hospital?” I growl.

He gives me the name and I rush out, yelling for the valet to bring back my car. I break every speed limit as I rush to the hospital twenty minutes away. I park in a rush before heading to the front desk.

“Juliette Landers?” I ask one of the nurses. “Where is she?”

Her eyes widen and she quickly looks up the room number before telling me. I rush to the elevator and once it opens, I press the button for the third floor. I stroke my nape as my heart continues racing with fear. Thousands of possibilities run through my mind as I try to think of what could have possibly made her faint. The elevator doors open after an eternity and I rush into the hallway, heading for Juliette’s hospital room.

My footsteps slow when I take in her friend Lisabell and Francine seated outside the room. Lisabell’s eyes zero in on me and she sends me an icy glare. My heart contorts as I walk up to them.

“Is she okay?” I ask wearily.

“She’s fine,” Lisabell spits. “No, thanks to you.”

“What does that mean? Can I see her?”

“Julie collapsed due to mental stress and exhaustion, Mr. Callahan. I’m guessing the past few days took a toll on her. I don’t think you can go in yet. The doctor advised us to let her rest for a while, which is why we’re outside,” Francine explains. Her tone is much nicer considering she works for me.

I turn back to the blonde that’s snarling at me. “I don’t get it. She passed out because we had a fight?” I swallow. I hadn’t realized she was feeling so awful about it.

“You’re so fucking self-absorbed.” Lisabell sighs.

I raise an eyebrow. She didn’t have this much of a mouth on her when she worked for me as my kids’ nanny. It would seem she has as much bite as her friend, but I can’t think about that right now.

“Tell me what’s wrong with her,” I press, feeling desperate.

Lisabell stares at me with her razor-sharp eyes. She seems to be pondering something and I watch her calmly as she does so. Finally, she sighs.

“I’m only going to tell you this because I think this situation is a little ridiculous and Julie’s being a coward. She’ll probably hate me for this, but you deserve to know. Plus, I’m sure you’ll go looking for her doctor and he’ll likely tell you the truth.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask in confusion.

“She’s pregnant,” Lisabell announces.

My stomach twists in a ridiculous knot. I stare at Lisabell but the words she said do not make any fucking sense.

“I’m sorry, could you repeat that?”

There’s a pained look in her eyes. “She’s pregnant, Xander. Julie’s pregnant with your baby.”

I take in the look on her face and then on Francine’s face beside her. My leg hits the back of a chair. I feel a little lightheaded. I’m not sure when my ass hits the chair. My hands go over my face as I exhale softly.

“When did she find out?” I question without looking up.
