“You are my boyfriend-in-law in this strange harem we have going on.” It was the same thing he said to me when he pulled me from the car crash.

“Stop. You’re making me blush.” He batted his eyelashes at me, and I laughed. “Okay enough fun. You think Balen’s under some weird spell or something?”

“Yes.”

“Could he be dangerous?” His voice was low.

I hesitated. “Not to Clawdia, but I think you and I need to be wary of him. Something isn’t right.”

“Charlie?” Elizabeth’s voice called as the door to the library pushed open.

“Hide me,” Charlie whispered as he darted behind me.

Elizabeth sighed as she walked in. “Charlie, why are you hiding behind your friend?”

“Because if I have to look at another book about spells, I’ll run away.” He peeked around me and glared. “You know there are other ways of learning, don’t you? I’m more of a hands-on learner.”

She rolled her eyes and said, “Yes, well, I’m sorry it took a while for Ingrid and me to plan our next steps.”

“I’m so glad you’ve managed to become besties while I’ve been planning offing myself,” he replied sarcastically.

“You’re so dramatic,” she sighed, and I had to agree.

He caught my side-eye and playfully pushed me as he stopped hiding and came to stand in front of his mother. “Anyway, now you’re here, question for you: Is there a spell or potion that could change someone’s personality?”

My gaze snapped to Elizabeth. I hadn’t thought to ask her about our issue since I wanted to keep it between ourselves.Charlie must trust her more than he lets on to involve her.

“Asking for yourself?” Elizabeth asked with bored eyes.

Charlie gave her a fake smile. “Hilarious. No.”

“Baelen isn’t acting like himself,” I explained.

“That could be caused by anything. Didn’t you say he came through a strange portal?” she asked.

“You think it could be the portal affecting him?” I frowned. Why would a portal have any effect on someone?

“Portal travel can be a dangerous thing. If he’d managed to warp one to get here, then it’s likely he’s suffered some kind of damage.”

“We thought that was the reason he wasn’t waking up, but could it give him a personality transplant?” Charlie asked.

Elizabeth pursed her lips. “I would think it would look more like a concussion. Not a personality transplant.”

“What could cause someone to completely change? For them to act indifferent to their soul mate?”

“He’s indifferent to you?”

“And cruel.”

“And he wasn’t before?”

“No.”

She tapped a finger against her lip as she thought. “There are dark spells that can influence behavior, but I’ve never come across nor heard of a witch who could wield them.”

“And how many witches would be in the realms to put a spell on him?” Charlie asked, frowning at the ground. His gaze flicked to me. “Unless you think someone here did it while he was unconscious?”

“I think it’s possible,” I conceded.
