I shook my head and chuckled. “No, Sunlight. I’ve never been so well-fed.”

Her eyes softened, and she said quietly, “I don’t know how often you need it. I don’t want you to feel like you have to ask me.”

“I’m well,” I assured her.

Charlie watched us. “You’re being normal today.”

I nodded. “For now.”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “You aren’t getting out of the cage.”

“I know.” I couldn’t help the smirk. His suspicion was entertaining and worked in my favor.

“And you can’t tell us anything?” He raised a questioning brow.

“No.”

He paused, still considering me intently, then shrugged. “We’ll figure it out. And when you’re back to normal, it’ll be good to have you here helping us with Fafnir.”

His easy acceptance of my place in his—their—lives, despite having only met me once, in which I also hadn’t given a good first impression, warmed my heart.

“Of course,” I choked out.

Zaide left the bathroom holding a brush. “Little Cat, can you help me for a moment?”

She rose, took the brush from him, and had him sit on the chair so she could begin combing through his long white hair. He closed his eyes, savoring her touch. It’s a kind of torture, being inside a cage watching, unable to touch or be touched.

“You don’t want me helping you with your hair?” Charlie asked playfully.

Zaide’s eyes cut to his friend, and he replied, “Little Cat has to comb out the tangles she put there.”

“And I still have no details.” Charlie pouted.

“You’ll have to live in suspense,” Clawdia teased.

“Why?” he asked and flicked Clawdia’s braid.

“Because it’s between us and the birds,” Zaide said, a wicked grin on his lips.

“Birds? You were outside?” Charlie’s mouth dropped open. “You were literally wild, and I was reading a fucking book. So not fair.”

“You can’t be there all the time, Charlie.” Clawdia laughed as she finished braiding Zaide’s hair and put her hand out for him to hand her his tie. The tie had a little prayer stone similar to the one he gave me in the dreamscape.

“I know. I just want to be.” Charlie sighed and began putting his shoes on. “Anyway, I’m off. I need to talk to Elizabeth.”

“I’ll come with you, Charlie.” Zaide looked up at Clawdia. “Little Cat?”

She shook her head and said, “I’m going to visit Karin and get some more pain killers and female products.”

Charlie straightened with a frown. “Be careful with her.”

His tone startled her, and she dropped Zaide’s braid. “What do you mean?”

“She was being weird yesterday.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Weird in what way?”

Charlie seemed to choke on his words as he said, “Just … okay, well, she, she came on to me.”
