I nodded at the book she was reading. “Have you found anything that could help?”

“I’ve been reading up on demons and how they are recalled from possession.” She pursed her lips and set her coffee down as she flicked back a few pages.

“It’s not a priest throwing holy water at them?” I asked jokingly.

“No.” She gave me an unamused look and turned back to her book, her fingers following the words on the page as she searched for something.

“Holy water?” Zaide frowned.

“It’s a religious thing. I’ll explain another time,” I said. Knowing him, he would love the idea of blessed water.

“Demons are recalled from possessing their host by calling another person, or themselves, using their name to go back to their body,” Elizabeth read.

“But shadows don’t have a true name, do they?” Zaide asked.

“No. And shadows are themselves shadows. Their body morphs with them, so we can’t recall him to a body,” Elizabeth added.

“None of this sounds positive,” I remarked, hoping she actually had something useful to say soon.

“It isn’t what is written, but what is not,” she said, her eyes sparkling with interest. “How does the shadow keep himself a shadow for so long? Their nature is to morph and change like the mist and clouds.”

Zaide caught on faster than I did. “You believe he is leaving Baelen at certain times?”

“I think if he hasn’t already, he will. And then we only need to capture him and find out his intentions with you all.”

I huffed out a frustrated breath. All that lead up for nothing. “So, we have no solution. Only a wait and see. Again.”

“All good things come to those that wait.” Elizabeth said to lighten the mood, but it didn’t work.

“Sure.” I folded my arms, and my stomach rumbled which only made me grumpier.

Elizabeth continued, “In the meantime, you can continue with your studies while Zaide helps me search for more information about shadows.”

My studies. God, I hate having to read all this magic shit. Although I should read up on making a magical tether so I can even the bond with Clawdia …

But just like I had in school, I distracted the teacher with questions. “What have the council said about Fafnir? Have they found him yet?”

Elizabeth sighed as she pushed a book in Zaide’s direction. “Not yet. I’m inclined to believe there is something strange happening in their teams because they are struggling to find anything.”

Something strange happening in the teams?I couldn’t stop myself. The need to find the information and solve the mystery curled inside me. I made a mental note to hack into their phones to see what was going on later.

Zaide flipped open a book and got to work, ignoring both of us. As much as he pretended to be cool and calm this morning in front of Baelen, I know he was still freaking out about the situation and desperate to change it.

“Can you do anything about the teams?” I asked.

“I’m still new to the council. They aren’t going to share any secrets with me just yet.” Elizabeth shrugged.Fucking politics.

“What about finding your relatives? Have they managed that at least?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Nothing.”

“I fucking told them where they were!” I exclaimed. “What more do they need? That should have been an easy win.”

What the fuck?I ran my hand through my hair and tried to shake the anger creeping over me.But how the fuck could they fuck that up?

“Apparently, no one was there when they turned up,” Elizabeth said calmly.

“And they couldn’t find anything telling them where to go next? They didn’t ask me to have another look?” I stood up, breathing hard. “These people are supposed to be the supernatural council’s best. The most trained. Specialized. And they can’t catch people when they are given an exact location?”
