“How?” I whispered.

We were trapped in a tin box, moving at the fastest we could go with a very angry dragon attempting to panfry us alive. It was hard to see the positives.

“I have faith,” Zaide said simply, his deep voice a calming balm for my racing heart.

I sent a quick prayer to whoever was listening. Please, please let us escape.

Taking a deep breath, I leaned into the distraction he offered me. I caressed his face and rubbed at the drying blood by his temple with my thumb. “Are you all right? You’re really hurt … Is this from our escape?”

He shook his head and nuzzled into my hand, placing a soft kiss on my palm. “I was with the task force on our way to you when our car was pushed off the road.”

I gasped. “What? Why? Who would do that?”

“I can’t begin to imagine.” He coughed and sighed. “I didn’t see who they were. But none of the task force leaders nor Alcor were conscious when Charlie found me at the side of the road.”

The cut on his head trickled a drop of blood again, and I swiped it away gently. I knew the head was a delicate area, but he was still bleeding, and it worried me.

“Let me heal you,” I demanded. He needed to be at his best in case our escape went pear-shaped, and more importantly, I hated to see him in pain and suffering.

He shook his head and offered me a small, tight, smile. “You are drained, Little Cat. Do not lie. I can feel it. We all need time to heal from tonight once Charlie gets us home.”

An intrusive thought said,If Charlie gets us home.

“Jesus fucking Christ!” Charlie shouted, bursting our bubble.

I whipped my head to see a car hurtling toward us. The headlights were so bright and dazzling I didn’t notice the car had strayed into our lane as it turned around the corner.

Charlie turned and braked, gritting his teeth and cursing under his breath. The seat belt jarred so I didn’t get flung across the passenger seats, but my head followed the movement and whipped to the side. I gasped as an ache began pulsating painfully where my neck had snapped.

“We might find out who pushed the task team leaders off the road quicker than we wanted to,” Charlie added breathlessly as he straightened the car and glanced at the giant vehicle in the rearview mirror.

His eyes widened.

“What is it?” Ignoring the ache in my neck, I turned to see the car skidding to a halt in front of the dragon.

Fafnir roared, and flames burst from his mouth, lighting up the sky, but he didn’t aim directly at the newcomers. He hovered in front of them, almost as though he was curious.

Why isn’t he trying to hurt them? What does he know that we don’t?

All four of the tinted windows rolled down. Guns appeared, quickly followed by the arms and heads of those aiming their weapons at Fafnir.

“They seem to be attempting to kill the dragon,” Zaide replied.

“He just survived a building falling on him.” I sighed heavily, not getting my hopes up that these people might beat him.

Charlie chose to ignore my comment and cheered, “Nice meeting you, Granddaddy! See you in Hell.” He put his foot down on the accelerator, and we sped away.

Despite starting to feel sick, facing backward in the car, I couldn’t take my eyes off the scene in front of me. Sparks flared from the guns, and shots rang out. I flinched instinctively, trying to follow the trajectory of the bullets with my eyes as Fafnir roared.

I couldn’t tell if they’d hit him or if he was just voicing his annoyance at these strangers attacking him, but he flapped his wings, making a gust of wind that knocked some weapons from their hands. He inhaled.

I turned around before I could witness people being barbecued. I’d seen enough horrible things for one day. But as we raced away, I saw no blast of light surround us, felt no heat, heard no screams.

We were too far away now to look back, but my anxiety doubled not knowing what just happened. Why didn’t he hurt them? What else might he have done to them instead?

“Do you think they are another supernatural task force?” Zaide asked.

Charlie scoffed. “A task force that uses guns? Pretty sure the supernatural community has better weapons.”
