“How interesting. Your fathers and mother have let you grow ignorant of their crimes against my people.” I remained silent. “Ombra, the realm of shadows. A realm dying because of you.”

The realm is dying? The isolation from the other realms has turned it to ash?

“I wasn’t alive at the time of the fall,” I replied, my body tensing. Was I right? Was this all for revenge? Because I could be reached when the gods couldn’t?

“No, but it was your fathers who caused it. Who were too late. Who saved their mate instead of the realms. Who destroyed our natural portal.” His voice grew louder with each sentence, the anger palpable.

I asked in a growl. “You want to hurt me to hurt them? You attacked me for revenge?”

He scoffed, and the black figures remained still. “We’ve made no move to attack you, youngling.”

I bared my teeth at the lie. “So the other shadows who attacked my dreamscape and tried to kill me were just a coincidence, then?”

“Not a coincidence. Our seers saw you. Some of my people decided to take matters into their own hands. While I understand their reasons, I can assure you they were punished for their disobedience.”

Shadow rebels attacked me? They were punished for disobedience? Who are these people?

Although more questions arose from the shadow’s statement, I relaxed slightly as a piece of the puzzle was revealed. “A seer. That’s how you have been able to take over my dreamscape.”

“Correct.” The air around us shifted, and the figures wavered. The male’s voice sounded again. “We are not here to harm you, youngling. If we make ourselves visible, do we have your word not to attack us?”

Confused, I righted myself, my fangs retracting. “Why would you take the risk? Why would you trust my word?”

“Risk is essential to change.”

I paused. They could have attacked me already, but they hadn’t. Control over the dreamscape was theirs, so I couldn’t change the landscape to escape the same way I did last time.

I’m powerless against them. I should hear them out instead of trying to fight.Especially if it regards a seer’s vision.

“I swear not to take any action to harm you unless you move to harm me first.”

“Your conditions are accepted.” I heard the grin in his voice, and the hair rose on the back of my neck as I wondered if I’d made the right choice.

The middle figure stepped forward, and as though he’d just moved into the light, his form solidified, and I could see him clearly. Pale gray eyes stood out against his black skin, and thin braids of gray hair fell to the nape of his neck. He only wore a thin, flowing skirt, which didn’t conceal much beneath and bared his muscular chest. He wasn’t much bigger than me but held himself like a male of importance.

At his sides, the male and female also stepped forward, revealing themselves. They had the same black skin and gray eyes, but the male had long black hair in thick dreadlocks and darker gray eyes. The female’s hair was in tight curls that circled her head like a halo, and her ash-colored gown covered her body like a veil.

They were all beautiful, but there was madness in their eyes. They are deadly.

“What do you want?” I asked finally.

“You cannot guess?” the other male asked as he threw out a hand toward the barren landscape.

“I stopped enjoying guessing games as a child.”

“We only wish to talk to you. Let me introduce myself. I am Kaatu, king of Ombra. This is my guard, Zillah, and my sister, Sayah.” The male in the middle and the voice who’d been speaking to me, gestured to the male and female and his sides.

I nodded my greeting to them. “I won’t introduce myself, as it seems you are already familiar with me.”

Kaatu raised his brow and smiled. “You aren’t curious about what our seer told us?”

“I’m sure you’re going to tell me anyway,” I drawled and shifted on my feet.

Get to the point so I can get back to my soul mates.

“You are our hope, Baelen of Blood.”

I stilled. It was the same thing my mother had told me all those years ago when she set me on the path to become the savior of the titans.
