“I am—”

He must have seen something in me because he vanished, and before I could think to run, a black smudge appeared on the rock next to my hand. Pain erupted where he touched as he disappeared under my skin. I growled and struggled but couldn’t do anything as he hid in the shadows of my mind and searched for information.

“You haven’t consummated the bond,”he whispered before chuckling darkly.“I know just what to do to fix that.”

CHAPTER7

CLAWDIA

There was a bear in the room. A loud, sleeping bear who’s snoring woke me up.

Opening bleary eyes, I found myself wrapped in Zaide’s arms, his face nuzzled into my hair and his large inhales and exhales pushed a strand of hair back and forth across my forehead. It was rather hypnotic to watch.

It was another thing the movies didn’t tell you about being in a relationship. Men slept loudly.

As if to prove my point, Charlie rolled to face me, a strange, strained expression on his face, and let out a rip-roaring fart. I thanked God he’d faced the other way, because had he done that on me, I would have kicked him out of bed.

I wiggled out from between them, too disturbed to stay in bed any longer, and to get Charlie back, I gently picked up Zaide’s arm and placed it on Charlie’s side. Zaide, like the cuddle monster he is, snuggled closer to Charlie until they were inches away.

Giggling, I picked up some clothes from the bag and tiptoed out of the room.

The cabin was lovely, considering there hadn’t been people living here for a few years. It was small but with an open plan kitchen and living space and a dining table pressed against the wall, which made it feel bigger. But with only one bedroom, it didn’t need to be big.

I dressed in the bathroom, washed my face, and brushed my teeth. My hair had dried strangely, so I pulled it back into a ponytail as I pushed my feet into sandals and then headed to the door.

I was greeted by the view of lush green woodland and little wooden cabins like ours grouped together at the bottom of a hill. In the distance, on top of the hill, a big house sat proudly, blocking the early morning light.

I headed toward the house, hoping they had some breakfast I could bring back to my men.

My men.

A giddy smile lit me up from the inside, and I could have skipped through a meadow, I was so happy.

I was so distracted I didn’t hear anyone approaching.

“Hallå, can I help you?” a female voice with a thick Swedish accent asked. I spun around to see a slender blond lady in her early twenties closing the door of a cabin further up the hill. Her smile was wide and welcoming as she walked down the steps toward me.

“I was looking for somewhere I can get breakfast. Am I going the right way?”

“Ah, of course.Ja, straight up the hill to the large house. I’ll walk with you if you like.”

“I’d be happy for the company.” I smiled, and we started walking up the hill.

“You arrived last night?” she asked.

“That’s right.”

“Ah, so you are …”

“Clawdia.”

She frowned, but the expression was gone before I could ask. A warm smile replaced it. “I’m Karin.”

I replayed the question in my head. Was she asking what kind of supernatural I am? Is that something supernaturals are happy to announce to a stranger?

I shook off the odd feeling as I plucked a leaf from a tree and asked, “How long have you been here?”

“All my life.”
