I picked up a plate and started filling it with the hot food. My stomach rumbled, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten yesterday. As I stacked an extra hash brown on my plate, I asked, “How are Alcor and the others?”

“Healing,” he replied.

I assessed his face and saw the fear that he tried to hide. “Now that Zaide and I are here, we can heal them.”

His lips tightened, and he nodded. “I’d appreciate that. But first, let’s have you identify Fafnir for us. Then we’ll fill your arms with food for Charlie and Zaide, and this afternoon, we can see the team and Alcor.”

“And the protector? Has he woken up?” I asked as I pressed the button for hot water.

Laurence shook his head. “He’s in the treatment center with the others. He seems fine. We are just waiting for him to wake.”

Joseph stood as we approached and pulled out a chair for me next to Marianne. “Clawdia, I’m glad to see you safe.”

“Thank you for helping us get out of there.” I sat down with my plate and tea and immediately began chopping into a sausage.

“I hear you are going to help identify Fafnir,” Marianne said with a smile.

I nodded and swallowed. “Anything I can do to help.”

“I hate to interrupt your breakfast, but I’m sure you understand that the sooner we identify him, the faster we can track his movements,” Joseph said.

“Of course.” I withheld a sigh as I put my cutlery down. My stomach roared even louder since it’d had a taste of food.

“These are the men we are currently tracking that we believe to be Fafnir.” He flicked through pictures on his phone, and I frowned, leaning closer to see them.

He offered me his phone, and I wiped my hands on my leg before I took it and flicked through the pictures as he had. Dread filled my stomach. “These are all of them?” I asked after flicking back and forth for a minute.

“Yes.”

I looked up as my heart rate increased and asked desperately, “You aren’t following any others?”

Joseph pursed his lips. “No.”

Marianne could see what I wanted to say on my face because she stated, “They aren’t him.”

I shook my head and closed my eyes. “He could be anywhere by now.”

Anywhere. Doing anything. Killing anyone.I shuddered.

Laurence placed a hand on my arm. “You’ve saved resources by identifying who he isn’t. Now our teams can get back to searching.”

It wasn’t much comfort, and I grimaced. “I’m sorry. If you have someone who can draw, I can describe him. Like the police do,” I offered.

Joseph shook his head. “We don’t have anyone here who can do that at the moment.”

I tapped my nails on the table as I thought. “Maybe I can ask Daithi if he can give us an image from my mind? I’m not entirely sure how his magic works, but I know he made an image once.”

Although Daithi’s help was never guaranteed, I had to ask. While it was nice to be safe, I knew we’d never feel truly safe again until Fafnir was stopped and the hunters left us alone. And I’d do what I could to make that happen.

He won’t make me give up again. I have something to live for now.

Joseph said, “Give us a basic description. Our team will continue to search and come up with possible suspects. You can let us know which ones are wrong until we can get an artist or your friend can produce an image. Does that seem fair?”

“Yes. Anything that will help.” And I did just that. I described Fafnir in as much detail as I could remember. They asked questions that helped prompt things I hadn’t thought of, and after a few minutes, Joseph, Marianne, and Laurence left me to finish my breakfast.

“Here we are, my love.” Savida’s cheery voice echoed through the house, and soon, his big body and flapping wings pushed through the doorway of the dining room. “Look, Daithi, a feast. And Clawdia. I see you have chosen the English morning meal. I approve.”

He and Daithi rambled over, gathered a plate of food and a drink, and joined me just as I was putting the last perfectly proportioned bite of bacon, beans, and eggs into my mouth.
