Zaide crossed his arms, his expression unchanged, but his voice in our minds was smug.“I told you there was more than meets the eye.”

“Yes, you’re such a powerful and all-knowing golden giant.”Charlie’s eyelids twitched and I knew he wanted to roll his eyes.

“Is there a way to undo whatever you have done, Little Cat? I do not want Charlie’s chatterings in my mind.”

“Shut up. You love it, really.”Charlie hid a smug smile behind his hand.

“Arabella?” Isaac drew our attention back to what was happening in the room. He threw his covers off, revealing his naked, very muscled chest and moved to join Alcor on Arabella’s bed. His eyes narrowed on their hands pressed against her cheek. “What’s going on?”

“We should leave,” Charlie said, taking my hand and pulling me up.

Arabella opened her mouth, panic in her eyes, but I interrupted, “I’ll be back to check on you all later. Rest up.”

We exchanged wide-eyed glances as we shut the door behind us. A slow smile crept up on my face, and I covered my mouth as a giggle threatened to escape.

“Is it bad that we left them?” I asked.

Charlie shook his head and threw his arm over my shoulders. “We have enough on our plate. We don’t need whatever clusterfuck drama that is. I’m starving. Shall we go and see what food we can get?”

I cast a look at the closed door where Baelen slept. “I don’t want to leave Baelen here with that incompetent doctor.”

It annoyed me just thinking about the doctor’s terrible attitude.

Zaide shook his head. “There’s nothing more you can do for him right now, Little Cat. Let’s let him rest.”

“When he wakes up, we won’t be there. He’ll be scared.”

“There’s not much that can frighten akari, and as soon as he’s awake, we can rush to his side. I promise.”

Please, let him wake up.

CHAPTER10

CLAWDIA

Aknock on the cabin door interrupted our nap a few hours later.

“I’ll get it,” Zaide muttered and rolled off the bed with a groan. Without his heat at my back, a cold draught chilled me, and I shivered, unable to fall back to sleep.

“What’s going on?” Charlie groaned.

“I think they are trying to drag us to the party,” I said, my lips grazing against his t-shirt as I smothered my face into his chest.

“A party?”

“You knew about it?” Zaide asked as he re-entered the room.

“Clawdia knew.” He stretched, and I sighed, knowing our nap was definitely over.

“A lady I met this morning invited me to get ready with her,” I explained, sitting up.

“Look at you, making new friends.”

Zaide studied me with his penetrating purple eyes. “You don’t want to go?”

“She just—” I hesitated. Karin didn’t really do anything to make me uncomfortable, so I couldn’t explain why my gut was so cautious around her. I shook my head and grimaced. “Never mind. I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“When does it start?” Charlie asked, rubbing his hands together like he was actually looking forward to socializing.
