“Let me get you some shoes, and then we can be on our way.” Natasha patted my shoulder and went into the bedroom.

“Yes, let’s go already. I’m hungry.” Naomi stated as she reached for a bag.

Many of Winnie’s witch friends came to call when Winnie summoned me. I was used to demonstrating my power, my bond, and my kind. Karin’s curiosity was understandable, expected even, but for some reason, it made me uncomfortable.

I decided to be brave and ask, “Karin, why are you so curious about familiars?”

“She’s always been like that,” Naomi replied, yawning and stretching.

“Curious since the day she was born,” Natasha added as she returned holding a pair of white sandals. “Here, try these.”

I slid my feet into the sandals, and although they were slightly too big, they had a buckle I could tighten around the ankle.

“That’s why she knows so much about magic,” Naomi finished. “She’s a witch know-it-all.”

I lifted my head to look curiously at Karin. She smiled and said, “I’ve never met one. Or met anyone with one. I just find it fascinating.”

It was answer enough for me. I nodded my understanding and stood up, suddenly excited to go to my first party. With my makeover and the wine sloshing around in my stomach, I was filled with confidence.

Natasha offered me an arm to take and gave me a devilish grin. “Now, let’s get you to your men. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they see you.”

Neither can I.

CHAPTER11

ZAIDE

“Ah, you must be our new guests. Please, come in.” A blond female ushered us into the main house. “We are so glad to have you join us.”

“Glad to be here! I’m Charlie, and this is Zaide.” Charlie matched her enthusiastic greeting and looked around as we walked through the halls. “Let me guess. You’re Karin’s sister.”

On second glance, she did have a resemblance to the woman we’d seen at the cabin we left Clawdia at, but this female looked older.

“You tease me.” She waved a hand as a blush rose to her cheeks.

“You’re not?” He pretended to be shocked.

I gave him a sidelong glance. What is he doing?

“Oh, I’m sure you know I’m her mother.” She spared me a look and, with a twinkle in her blue eyes, said, “He’s a naughty one, isn’t he.”

“Charlie, stop flirting with the older lady. It’s disturbing.”I told him, trying not to show my discomfort on my face.

His laughter echoed through my mind.“It’s harmless. Charming the person that feeds you is never a bad idea.”

The lady continued speaking, unaware of our mental conversation, “I’m Ingrid, and this island has been in my family for centuries. Would you like a tour of the house?”

“We’d love it. Especially if you have any secret passageways or rooms hidden behind a bookcase,” Charlie said as we followed her through the dining area and kitchen. “I’m thinking about getting one of those installed in my house to hide all my new witch gear.”

“No secret rooms since our island is already so well hidden, but we do have a large library. My daughter is quite the researcher.”

“What does she research?” I asked.

She stopped at the top of the stairs to turn and look at me. “Magic. Everything to do with magic. I’m sure you and your friends will be the talk of everyone here tonight since you’re all so powerful and from other realms. I know my daughter will be eager to ask you lots of questions.”

Charlie and I exchanged glances when she turned back to guide us through the upstairs halls. Neither of us wanted to answer the same questions all night. We just wanted a night to forget our troubles. I wanted to create memories I could hold on to when I am taken from them.

I gritted my teeth.Don’t think of it. Enjoy the moment.
