“Stay here,” Charlie said. “I’m just going to pull money from the cashpoint. Don’t move until I’m back.”

I opened my mouth to protest, my anxiety rocketing at the thought of us separating, but he was already gone.

Zaide and I huddled in the corner of the alleyway, his arms wrapped around me keeping the chill from seeping into my bones. I tugged the shirt over my legs and ran my hands up and down Zaide’s arms.

“Thank you for coming for me,” I whispered.

“Don’t leave me again, Little Cat. When I woke up to see you missing … I can’t describe my fear. I can’t lose you again.”

I shook my head fiercely. “You won’t. I’m sorry, I won’t do it again, it’s just … I needed to see him. Face him.”

“I don’t understand. Why would you need to face—“

Zaide’s words were swallowed by the humming of powerful magic, and a blue light flashed in the darkness. Swirling in the center of the wall opposite us, the blue light expanded.

A portal.

I flinched away into Zaide’s chest, and his grip on me tightened.

Oh, Lord. Won’t this day ever end?

CHAPTER2

CHARLIE

Isnatched hundreds of krona out of the cash machine, keeping one eye looking for supernatural hunters and the other watching the sky for signs of my evil grandad.

How has it only been a day and so much bad shit has happened?

Shoving the money into my wallet, I dashed back to my familiar and her soul pair. When I saw a glowing blue light and heard the whooshing that came with a portal opening, I panicked.

As I ran into the alleyway, Zaide stepped fearlessly in front of Clawdia, his arm stretched back to keep her away, even though it looked like a strong wind could knock him down.

When I’m grown up, I want to be as badass as Zaide.

“Stay back, Charlie,” he warned, not taking his eyes off the giant blue swirl in the wall.

Exhaling slowly, I steeled myself to deal with the next disaster.

“Ahhh, friends. We thought it would be a good time for a stroll around the town,” Savida’s cheery voice sounded. Relief hit me like a gunshot, and I sagged against the wall, sighing.

A large, black body, leathery wings, and flame-red hair came through the portal, closely followed by Daithi.

“Savida. Daithi. Thank Christ,” I breathed.

Even though we’d left things on bad terms after they confessed to being manipulative bastards with Zaide, I could’ve kissed them for turning up in the nick of time. They’d just made my job of getting us all out of here so much easier.

Savida frowned when he caught sight of us all. “You’re all dirty. Have you been rolling in the mud together?”

“No—“ Clawdia began.

“Say no more. I remember the passion of new love. Although, I don’t remember the dirt,” he eyed Daithi contemplatively.

I barked a laugh as Daithi shook his head. I said, “Nice to see you saving us for a change. Let’s get the fuck out of here. We need to get my laptop and stuff before we leave.”

“Leave? The apartment?” Savida’s expression turned from confusion to despair. “Charlie, you can’t still mean for us to … Zaide has forgiven us. We are helping.”

I didn’t know that.Zaide looked at me, his swollen face shrouded in the darkness, and nodded.
