While I really wanted to know what they’d said to get back into Zaide’s good books, I didn’t have time to ask questions.

I shook my head. “No, I don’t mean you and Daithi. I mean all of us.”

“Ah. Good.” His wings sagged as he sighed, but he tilted his head in confusion. “But why?”

“We are being tracked by some people who kill supernaturals,” Clawdia replied quietly. She gripped Zaide’s hand tightly as he swayed.

“I knew this realm was cursed,” Daithi muttered.

“Where is Alcor?” Savida asked, his wings fluttering anxiously as he looked around.

“He’s … in safe hands. I hope,” I replied, thinking of the strangers who told me to leave him with them and rescue Clawdia with Zaide.

But my vague response only made the demon more concerned. “Shall we go and retrieve him?”

I hesitated, glancing at Zaide, who looked worse by the second, then shook my head. “Let’s get back first. I want to get us set up somewhere safe, and then we can go get him.”

“Of course. Let us go,” Daithi said, turning his back to us as another portal burst to life on the wall.

“Thank you for coming for us,” Zaide whispered to Savida, then slapped him on the back.

Savida shook his head. “Wasn’t my idea. Daithi saw you all running, and so here we are.”

Daithi stepped into the portal, and as I took a step to follow him, Savida shoved me out of the way and charged into the blue swirl, shouting, “Last one through the portal is a Lagworm!”

We stumbled into the apartment, littering the floor with ash and dirt. As much as I wanted to go to sleep for a thousand years, there wasn’t time to relax. The portal closed behind us with a blinding flash and snapped me into action.

I fell onto the sofa and plugged my phone in to charge on the side table. Turning back to my ragtag group, I started giving instructions.

“Go shower. Both of you,” I told Zaide, who could barely keep his eyes open, and Clawdia, who was shivering.

“Are we not leaving soon?” Savida asked, his wings fluttering anxiously.

“I’m going to call the council. Update them and then get us somewhere to go. The quicker we move, the safer we’ll be.”

“Shower, then pack.” Clawdia nodded and tugged Zaide toward the bathroom.

“Charlie, before you call the council …” Daithi started, perching awkwardly on the other sofa and staring at me.

I waved my hand, already knowing what he was about to say. “If Zaide has forgiven you and you are helping instead of hiding, then you don’t need to say anything else.”

He raised a green brow. “It’s that easy?”

“There are bigger issues, so yeah, for the moment, it’s that easy.” I rubbed my head, nursing the epic headache brewing in my brain.

Savida took the seat next to me. “We do want to apologize. We didn’t rescue you in the cave despite everything you did to help save me. That wasn’t fair, or kind.”

“Apology accepted,” I said.

Daithi’s lip turned down a fraction. “I do not believe you are telling the truth.”

I huffed out a breath of frustration and stood up. “I understand you want to clear the air. You want to apologize. I get it. But I don’t have the headspace for it. And honestly, Clawdia needs an apology from you more than I do. After all, you were going to use her to get Zaide’s titan powers back. You hated her, blamed her, turned her into a human and a cat against her will. Then let her rot with your friend in a cave.” I shook myself. “I’m getting angry again just thinking about it, and I don’t want to be angry. Point is, you were an arsehole, and you need to fix it.”

“I will.” Daithi stared steadily at me despite my pointed finger in his face, and a gleam of sweat covering his skin.

Is he sick?
