“So, you think he has the magic somewhere else? In jars? Like the witches did with the fires?” Charlie asked me.

“I don’t know. He was talking about it like it was food. He certainly seems to think it feeds him, but if it feeds him then it can’t be his hoard,” I replied, my head hurting with all the conflicting information.

“We aren’t going to figure it all out right now. But we have a lot more knowledge of our enemy than we started with.” Zaide patted my leg reassuringly.

“Yes.” I nodded and smiled reluctantly at Sigurd. “Thank you for answering all our questions.”

“This world needs to be rid of Fafnir for the good of all the realms. I am happy to help however you deem appropriate.”

Deem appropriate? He isn’t keen to fight his enemy and lead us?The longer the conversation went on, the moresuspicious and confused I became. I asked Charlie,“Are you as confused as I, or am I being unreasonable?”

“Something smells fishy for sure.”

I smiled at Sigurd before standing. “You’ve been speaking for an awfully long time now, so I think it’s time we leave you in peace.”

Charlie joined me. “We’ll inform the council that you’re awake and let them know everything you’ve told us. You shouldn’t be subjected to their questioning.”

“And dinner will be served in a few hours,” Zaide said in his gorgeous low voice.

“Thank you for your help in healing me,” Sigurd replied.

As I turned to leave, my eyes brushed past the door which housed my soul mate. While I wasn’t sure I could entirely trust Sigurd, asking him about Baelen might help me heal him.

“Oh, before I go, I do have one more question for you.” He smiled kindly and waved me on. “Have there ever been instances of portals opening while you were alive?”

He raised an eyebrow. “None that I am aware of.”

I bit my lip. “If there was such an incident, what would be the effect on the person who crossed?”

“The spell that gave my essence control over portals is tied to blood. I was imbedded with blood from all the realms’ creatures to prevent the use of portals outside. If I had to guess the effect of someone who has circumvented that spell, I would assume their magic would be warring with their blood. I couldn’t imagine how that might affect them, but I don’t imagine it’s pleasant.”

“Could I heal that?” I said more to myself than to him, but he tilted his head and replied.

“I don’t know the extent of your magic, but a war isn’t something that is healed.”

I huffed out a breath. “So we’d just have to wait to see what wins the war?”

“There are no winners in war.”

Flooded with a sense of dread and helplessness, I closed my eyes.

Baelen … what have you done?

CHAPTER16

BAELEN

Ididn’t know how much time had passed when I became aware of voices.

“He is still not awake?” a male’s voice asked. It accompanied the snick of a door closing and footsteps approaching me. I didn’t recognize the voice, but my mind hadn’t yet caught up with itself, and I was only able to listen.

I felt the soft blow of air over my face, and a female voice replied, “I don’t know why he hasn’t woken up. His thread is green. He should be fine.”

Her hand stroked my brow in gentle repetitive movements. It was soothing. But why do I need to be soothed?

“The protector couldn’t say what might help him?”

“Nothing helpful.”
