“I—well—no, you probably shouldn’t bring that up.”

“It’s good to know where the line is.” The male’s voice was serious, but I heard the edge of laughter in it.

I coughed my amusement, and suddenly, small hands pressed against my chest.

“Baelen?” Clawdia asked. “Are you awake?”

“Sunlight?” I grunted as I tried to open my eyes.

My mind became aware of the throbbing pain throughout my entire body. My head felt so full and fuzzy.

Why do I feel like this? What happened to me?

“I did.”a voice in my mind whispered darkly with a laugh.

Then suddenly I was shoved out of my own mind. I lost control of my entire body, and my consciousness was pushed to the back of my mind. Forced to watch passively as my eyes blinked but I didn’t feel, I felt the shadow of another person overtake everything. Through the panic and helplessness, I realized who I was now sharing my body with.

“Kaatu.”

“Hello, Baelen. Hope you don’t mind, but I’ll be taking over your body until we can get our portal fixed and my realm can heal.”

“Get out of my body.”I started to struggle against the dark strands of shadow holding my consciousness hostage. I pushed and pushed against them, and my body jerked with the internal struggle.

“Stop struggling.”

“Never.”

“I’m here. Are you okay?” Clawdia’s voice called like a siren’s song. I felt pulled closer to her. Sinking into my body, I felt the effects of being pulled into another realm via a shadow. My entire body hurt, but I was now in control, and Kaatu struggled in my mind against me.

“What did you do to me?”

“What I needed to. Now you can spend time with your soul mate. You should thank me.”

“Mates. And I’d rather destroy my relationship with them than use them.”

“But you aren’t going to be the one in control.”

“I am for now.”But I knew it was only a matter of time before he managed to take control again. He was too strong. And he knew it too.

“Baelen,” Clawdia whispered. “Please answer me.”

“Hurt,” I huffed, glad I could reply to her but not without fighting for the control of my mouth and with pain draining my energy with every small movement.

“Where are you hurt?” Her voice hitched, and her hands roamed over my chest again, searching for injury. Her long hair brushed my arm and chest. Her face was the picture of concern.

“Everywhere,” I grunted.

She was just as beautiful as she was in our dreams. But I could feel her properly. Touch her. See the blemishes on her skin, see the pale blue veins pulsing temptingly under her skin.

I wanted to ask what happened to her when she left the dreamscape and what I’ve missed, but the smell of her heady, delicious blood distracted me to the point my fangs dropped. I salivated.

Her hand cupped my cheek and searched my eyes. “Baelen, your eyes. Was there always a dark ring around them?”

I couldn’t respond as Kaatu took advantage of my distraction and took over again, pushing me back into the empty, feelingless place in the back of my mind.If he takes over entirely, I’ll go mad in this place.Watching but not feeling. Screaming but not being heard. I felt as though I was in a nightmare. A horrible nightmare.

“No,”I screamed.“You can’t do this to me. I don’t want to lie to her.”

“We lie to everyone we love, Baelen,”he replied solemnly.
