“You didn’t have to shout like that,” she whispered, and her hunched shoulders and saddened eyes hurt to look at. “He was here to help. I’ve been worried.”

“I’m sorry,” I panted.

She stared at me. Her violet eyes were penetrating and unfocused, telling me she was checking on my thread.

“Do you need blood?” she asked once her eyes refocused on me.

“I don’t want to taste blood. I’m not akari.”Kaatu sounded almost petulant.

I scoffed.“I don’t care what you want. Get out of my body.”

“I’m not leaving. You know my terms. I think you’ll bend to them sooner or later.”

“Then you’ll deal with the consequences of inhabiting an akari body.”

“Don’t touch her wrist, or I’ll make you sorry,”he snarled.

“My body needs to recover from whatever shadow magic you used to get us here. You want my body to be able to move to consummate my bonds, yes? Or should I ask her to sit astride me right now and do all the work,”I sneered.

He ignored my tone, speaking calmly, which only angered me further.“Admittedly, I didn’t think it would make you feel so terrible. Akari are cousins to shadows. You should have traveled more easily.”

Fury made my heart race and my jaw ache from clenching it, but I turned my attention from the tormentor in my mind and hissed, “Yes,” in answer to my soul mate’s question.

Kaatu tried to stop me, tried to push me out, but he wasn’t prepared for how strong a hungry akari can be for blood or how powerful the promise of his soul mate’s blood could be. But he was clever, and he’d know for next time.

I need to make sure I get enough to last me however long this shadow intends to hold me hostage inside my body,I told myself pragmatically. He is sure to make this my first and last time feeding.

“All right.” She sat on the bed and offered me her arm. I sucked in a breath of her fragrant skin and watched the blood pulse in the blue of her veins. My tongue swept across my lip as I salivated. Dying for a taste of sunlight.

Control yourself. Don’t hurt her. Don’t drain her. She’s offering salvation,I reminded myself.

She must have sensed my nerves, which gave me hope that she could read me and know I’m not entirely myself, because she assured me. “It’s okay. We’ve done this before.”

“Nothing is going to compare to the reality of you.” I stroked her arm and peered into her eyes.

A blush rushed up her neck. “That’s sweet. But you’re hurting. Please let me help.” She raised her wrist to my lips and smiled gently.

Unable to stop myself, I plunged my fangs into her and groaned as the taste of rich sunshine spilled over my tongue. Flicking my eyes up to look at my soul mate, I saw her close her eyes, her lips parted and her arms relaxed as my bite pleasured her.

I pulled her toward me so she could be in the crook of my arm, holding her wrist to my mouth as she lay limply, her face tucked into my neck, and I enjoyed the feel of her. Her weight and warm body against me for the first time … I relished it. As I sucked another gulp of the ambrosia seeping from her wrist, she groaned, twisting her legs and nuzzling into my chest, her lips grazing my chest and making my cock stiffen painfully.

“Baelen,” she whispered.

My high was rudely interrupted.“I didn’t know taking blood had this effect on the victim.”

“She is no victim. Go away. You’re ruining this for me.”

“I feel violated tasting this.”

“I feel violated by you being in my head, so we are all losers.”

I took my last draw of blood and licked across the puncture wounds. Pressing a kiss to her wrist, I said, “Thank you, my sunlight.”

“You’re welcome,” she whispered, suddenly shy. The blood rushing into her cheeks assured me I hadn’t taken too much and colored her cheeks prettily. “Are you feeling better?”

I nodded. “Much.”

“What happened? How did you get here? Who did this to you?” She stroked her hand across my chest. “You look like you’ve been bruised all over, but I can’t heal it. Is that something to do with the shadows?” She stroked her hand across my chest, and I focused on the skin of my chest. Blotches of black seemed to move like ink and water under my dark skin.
