“She did what?” Naomi gasped.

“Wanted to know if I wanted to be bad with her.” I felt sick repeating it.

“Oh, goddess. She said that?” Her expression echoed the disgust I felt.

“Unfortunately.”

“No wonder you’re in a state of shock.”

“One moment, we’re talking about measuring magic, and the next …”

Noami clicked her tongue and made a noise of understanding. “She doesn’t know a lot about flirting. But she can tell you a lot about magic. She plays to her strengths.”

“She knows I’m with Clawdia, so even if I knew she was flirting with the magic talk, she shouldn’t be trying to move in on me.” I growled. Now that I was recovering from the shock, the anger settled in.

She shrugged. “I don’t know what to tell you.”

“Why the hell would she do that?” I threw my arms out in exasperation. This day has been so fucking weird.

“I don’t know. But if I had to guess, I’d say it was about power.” Naomi leaned against a shelf and crossed her arms.

“Power?

“You’re powerful. You’ve got the blood of some of the most amazing witch families. You have a familiar, and your familiar is a titan soul pair. You have so much potential. You’re probably the most powerful witch ever. If you don’t count half breeds.”

“While I appreciate the ego stroke after the trauma I just suffered, I don’t see what this has to do with Karin,” I said as I returned to my seat.

“You don’t seem to understand what you have. But Karin is painfully aware of what she doesn’t have.”

“What does that mean?” I sighed and rubbed my forehead.

“Our family stays here to keep safe, to guard the records and books we keep and ensure the wards stay up and help us.”

“Right … and?”

“And she can’t ensure the wards stay full with her amount of magic. She can barely put a candle out.”

“If that’s the requirement for a good witch, then I’m useless,” I remarked.

“You just haven’t learned anything yet. But it’s made her feel inadequate. So, she’s made up for it by learning everything she can about magic. It’s the one thing that sets her apart and makes her feel valuable. Without power in the witching world, you aren’t anything.” She raised her brow. “Half the reason we follow lines through the matriarchal lines is because boys don’t tend to be as powerful as girls. You’re a real rare gem.” She winked, and I laughed.

“That’s what I always tell myself.”

I refused to feel sorry for Karin after today’s crazy but acknowledged that it would suck to be so passionate about something you couldn’t take part in. I added, “And thanks for the insight.”

“No problem. Now you need to answer something for me.”

“Sure.” I shrugged.

Her eyes laughed, and she pointed at the book on my desk. “Why are you reading my why choose romance book?”

CHAPTER22

ZAIDE

Istrode into the library in the main house and spotted Charlie sitting alone at a desk with a tortured look on his face. I coughed to announce myself, and his head snapped up from his book.

“God, you have good timing. Please get me out of here. I’m so bored I could die.” I chuckled at his dramatics but then his eyes narrowed, he stood up and charged toward me. “But first,” he began and punched me hard in the arm.
