Zero

There was something off about the way Jack said it, and it wasn’t because he hated the thought of Jack fucking someone else. He did, but that wasn’t why he found himself so concerned.

“It seemed pretty heated between you two.”

Jack snapped his gaze onto Zero, the anger in his eyes stealing his breath for a second. He’d never seen that kind of disdain from Jack before. Not even toward Sully.

“What? You think I’m just a hothead who argues with everyone?”

Zero shook his head. “No. Quite the opposite.”

Jack stared at him, looking dumbfounded, his mouth opening and closing but no words came out.

“I know you don’t want to, but you can trust me,” he said, taking a step closer.

Jack clenched his jaw tight and something akin to betrayal flashed through his eyes.

“I can’t trust anyone,” he said before turning on his heels and walking across the parking lot toward his bike.

Zero watched him go, his heart bleeding for the man.

He remembered what it was like. The only one he’d ever trusted while on the inside was Walker, and for a very long time after he’d gotten out, he’d still only trusted him. It had taken time. Months. Getting used to different rules, different kinds of people, it’d been so fucking hard.

Jack had only been in prison for a year, but he had a feeling Jack had fought a lot more battles than he’d told anyone about. He had more scars than he let anyone see. Something had made him cut contact with the people he loved and from what he’d been told about the man, it had to have been some really serious shit for him to do that.

The fact that Sully didn’t seem to realize as much made him mad at the guy for Jack’s sake. It made him mad at everyone.

They hadn’t had Jack’s back when he needed them the most but, whether Jack liked it or not, he would be there for him now.

He would earn Jack’s trust because his heart was telling him it would be worth all the pain and trouble it would, no doubt, involve.

Jack

He was still reeling from seeing Gillies. He’d stupidly thought now that he was out, he wouldn’t have to see that jackass again. He’d thought he wouldn’t have to tell anyone about it.

His chances of rejoining the Kings would be almost zero if they found out.

He couldn’t tell anyone. Especially Zero.

He didn’t know him well enough to know if he could or even would keep his secrets.

All Gillies would have to do was show up at the club and he’d get thrown out. If King was in a good mood, that was.

Gillies was at least smart enough to not do that. He couldn’t get information or evidence from a dead man, and he still wanted it despite Jack refusing all these months.

He remembered the first time he’d seen Gillies in prison. How the man had run his gaze over him like he was starving and Jack was an all-you-can-eat buffet.

At first, he’d been surprised but happy to see a familiar face. Then he’d noticed the badge clipped to the man’s belt. The gold badge that had detective written on it.

He’d fucked a cop and he’d had no fucking idea.

“I know an addict when I see one,” Gillies had said, then he’d run his gaze over Jack, his lips pursed. “And you’re not one. So that begs the question; who are you covering for and why?”

Gillies had asked him the same question every time. He’d refused to answer each time. Gillies had then told him he wasn’t brave for taking the fall. He was just stupid. If he talked, Gillies could get him out.

He was at a point right now where he wasn’t even sure if he’d earned his early release or if that had just been Gillies pulling some strings.

He pulled up in front of the auto shop, relieved when he didn’t see his brother’s bike anywhere.
