Ricky stepped into Jack’s cell and put a hand on his shoulder while staring into his eyes.

“You’re one of the good ones, Jacko.”

He had to swallow hard when hearing that. He already knew Ricky thought as much but it just served as a reminder that if Ricky didn’t, he probably wouldn’t be alive.

“Thank you.”

He could tell from the look in Ricky’s pale blue eyes that he knew exactly what he was thanking him for.

“Don’t worry ‘bout it,” Ricky said with a wink. “Just promise me you’ll have some fun for me out there, yeah?”

“I promise.”

Zero

He walked into the auto shop and wasn’t surprised that the first thing he saw was Jet and Walker wrapped around each other.

“You know you see each other all day every day, right?”

Jet tilted his head back just enough to look at Zero.

“So?” Jet asked. “What’s your point?”

“I think he misses us,” Walker said with a low chuckle that had Jet looking back at him with a soft smile.

“I so don’t.”

He did. He really did. Just not the part where he had to put on headphones and blast music until his skull was vibrating to not hear those two go at it every damn chance they got.

Moving out of their house had been bittersweet though.

“You’re a terrible liar,” Jet said to him.

“Dude immediately copped to a murder. What did you expect?” Sully said, appearing behind Walker and Jet.

Zero flipped him off and wasn’t surprised when Jet kicked Sully in the shin. Jet was always on his side which was as heartwarming as it was terrifying.

He’d only had very few people care about him his whole life and when he’d shown up there a little over a year ago, he hadn’t expected Jet to become one of those people but Jet had surprised him.

While Sully jumped around on one leg, cursing the hell out of Jet, Walker dragged Jet away before he could get into it with Sully. Those two always made a mess when they got into a prank war. The pink glitter dust in the vents had been golden, though. Sully had been sparkling for weeks. His old lady, who also happened to be Jet’s sister, had refused to get anywhere near him for fear of the sparkles. She then proceeded to only wear pink for the next few weeks just to taunt the poor man.

“Hey,” Sully said, flashing him a wide smile. “Mind doing me a solid?”

Zero arched a brow at him. “Depends on what it is.”

It really didn’t. He owed every single one of the Kings so damn much. He’d never say no to them. Sully didn’t need to know that, though. Or else he’d never get a full day of work done.

“My brother’s getting out today,” Sully said, surprising Zero with the melancholy smile he wore.

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

From everything Sully and the others had told him about Jack, he’d expected Sully to be throwing a party, not be looking like he was about to have a colonoscopy.

“Yeah…” Sully stared off over Zero’s shoulder for a few seconds, his lips pressed tight. “I… Yeah, of course, it is. It’s just that Ash has a scan today. We’re kinda real nervous about it.”

“Everything okay?”

“Jack’s being released pretty much at the same time,” Sully said instead of answering. He then proceeded to bat his lashes at Zero, making it inherently clear what he was asking for.
