“I can’t believe I didn’t see it,” Sully muttered, shaking his head. “How the hell did it take someone who doesn’t even know you, when I, your god damned twin, couldn’t see it.”

His shoulders snapped up and the tension he’d felt before had nothing on how he felt now.

“What the hell did Zero tell you?”

Sully’s expression softened. “That something really bad had to have happened for you to cut me out of your life.”

He was forced to swallow hard, emotions he didn’t want anything to do with clogging his throat.

Sully grabbed his hand and practically dragged him into the living room where he pushed him down onto the couch. Sully sat down next to him, folding his legs under himself, and turned to face Jack.

“I’m sorry we took over your room,” Sully said, real regret showing on his face. “We figured you wouldn’t be out until after the baby was born and… I would’ve asked, you know?”

Jack nodded. Yeah, he did know. His anger had been mostly irrational. Mostly.

“What did you do with my stuff?”

“It’s in storage. I only kept a few things in the basement because I couldn’t pack those away. Not for real. I um… I’m buying you out of the house.”

“Okay.”

Sully arched a disbelieving brow at him. “Are you sure you’re okay with that?”

“I’m not living with a baby.”

Sully chuckled, making Jack crack a small smile.

“Where are you staying?”

“With Zero. He’s got a spare room.”

Sully nodded, then patted Jack’s hand.

“Talk to me,” Sully said.

Jack sighed and dropped his head forward.

“I wasn’t doing or selling drugs.”

“I know.”

He raised his head to meet Sully’s gaze, the firm belief he saw in his eyes making him breathe a little easier.

“Remember Helena?”

“Helena? The Helena we used to live next door to?”

Jack nodded. Back when they’d lived at home, they’d babysat the neighbor’s daughter since they were ten. Helena was five years younger than them, and she’d been a pure angel to watch.

He’d always been closer to her than Sully had. He’d always been the one she shared her secrets with. He’d shared some of his with her as well. He’d always seen her as the baby sister he never got and he knew Sully felt the same, which was why he’d kept more of a distance since he found out about the crush she’d had on him when she was twelve. Then they’d joined the Kings and she’d been in high school so they’d drifted apart.

“She called me. Needed help,” he said, dropping his gaze to his hands. “Her crackhead boyfriend got her hooked. She was trying to get clean and leave his ass. He wouldn’t let her. She asked me not to tell anyone. I’d been trying to help her get out for a few weeks when she called that night. She was scared to death. She’d tried to leave on her own and he’d caught her. She had to lock herself in the bathroom.”

From the way Sully was looking at him, he already had an idea of what happened next.

“I beat the crap out of him,” he said, a small sense of pride filling him at the memory. That fucker had more than deserved it. “I’d gone there on my bike and there was no way I was putting her on that, so we took her car. I got Helena in it and took off toward the club. I was driving too fast.”

“That’s why you got pulled over,” Sully said.
