“I knew from the look on her face that there were drugs in the car.” He’d had his gun on him too, which hadn’t exactly helped his case. He looked up at Sully. “I couldn’t let her down.”

“You took the fall for her.”

He nodded. The only ones who knew Helena had been with him that night were the cops and his lawyer, Milo. He hadn’t let anyone else get involved. The last thing he needed was to draw attention to Helena. Her ex ran with a bad crowd, and he had just kicked a few of the guy’s teeth out.

“Where’s she now?”

“She’s safe. I had Milo take her to King. He promised not to tell him how he knew her. Just that she needed help to get somewhere safe.”

“Jesus,” Sully said on a sigh.

“Before all of that, I met a guy at a club. We fucked a few times. I liked him. I mean I actually liked him.”

Sully’s brows shot up and he got why. He’d never been one to want a relationship. He’d never liked anyone enough. Until York Gillies. The man had been everything he could have ever wanted. He’d been perfect. Now he knew why.

“He came to visit me in prison.”

“Please tell me you didn’t marry him to get conjugal visitations,” Sully said with a groan.

“I wish that was it.”

“It’s worse?”

Jack nodded and said, “He’s a cop. Vice detective.”

“Fuck,” Sully breathed.

“Yeah.” He dropped his gaze to his hands. “He wanted me to flip on the Kings. I told him no, but he kept coming back. It didn’t take long before the rumors started. I had one friend in there, Sul. One. The rest thought I was a snitch. My friend was someone no one wanted to cross so I was safe, but do you know what they do when they can’t get to the snitch?”

“Go after his family,” Sully said and squeezed his eyes shut while he shook his head. When he opened them, when he met Jack’s gaze, there was finally understanding in them.

“You were keeping us safe.”

He nodded.

He’d done everything he could to protect them. He’d even made sure some of the other inmates would overhear him telling Ricky how he was no longer in the club because of the drugs and how he hated them for it. The anger he’d displayed was real, but the reasons behind it weren’t. It seemed to have worked though.

The ones after him would’ve thought twice before attacking a motorcycle club anyway, but he’d had to make sure they wouldn’t go after Sully and Ash.

He heard the lock turn and the front door open.

“Babe? You mind grabbing the groceries? My feet are killing me.”

Sully got up and disappeared into the hallway and it wasn’t long after that when Ash walked into the room and the second she laid eyes on him, she started to cry. Jack was out of his seat the next second, pulling her against him.

He didn’t think he’d ever seen her cry before and he sure as fuck hated that he was the cause of it.

She pulled back and held onto his arms, her nails digging in, but he didn’t mind.

“You’re here,” she whispered, tears running down her cheeks.

He could only nod.

“Does that mean…?”

“Yeah,” he croaked out.

He needed to stop looking at her or he’d start crying, too.
