“You hate that you don’t feel guilty.”

Zero squeezed his eyes shut, willing back the stupid tears filling them.

“You think you deserved that time in prison. You didn’t. You don’t need to feel guilty. About that or about me not knowing.”

When he opened his eyes, his breath caught in his throat. Jack’s eyes were filled with a fiery protectiveness.

“But—”

“No. No buts.”

He wasn’t sure how to feel except somehow he was relieved. He was also surprised. Still a bit in disbelief, too.

Jack caught his chin between his fingers and stared deeply into his eyes.

“You saved someone,” Jack said. “That is exactly what the Kings do. You’ve earned your cut.”

The lump in Zero’s throat wasn’t going anywhere.

He wasn’t sure Jack had ever looked at him with such warmth and conviction before. It was as comforting as it was nerve-wracking.

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise,” Jack said.

His heart was beating so fast it almost hurt.

He leaned in and Jack was quick to close the distance between their lips. Jack’s mouth was hot on his, that tongue sweeping in to drive him insane. He grabbed at Jack, needing him closer.

Jack moved him backward. His hip hit the table and hands moved up the back of his thighs, grabbing his ass to lift him onto the table. Jack stepped between his legs and Zero didn’t hesitate to wrap them around Jack’s waist.

Jack rolled his hips and feeling the man’s hardening dick against him had a needy moan escaping him.

A squeal had them pulling apart, Jack turning so he was in front of Zero. Over his shoulder, he could see Jet standing in the doorway, his eyes wide and his mouth hanging open.

“What the hell did I just walk in on?”

He knew he had to look like Jack had just kissed the hell out of him. He had. He so had. He was still struggling to catch his breath.

Len walked past Jet into the room and after looking at them for one second, she rolled her eyes and said, “Not on the table. Jeez, guys. How many times do I have to tell you that? That’s so fucking unsanitary.”

Jet was still in the doorway, blinking at them. Then he threw his hands up with an annoyed huff that had Jack barking out a laugh.

He didn’t know how to behave or what to do, especially when Jack turned and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.

He felt… lost. He didn’t know what the hell was happening. Where had angry, punishing Jack gone? He wasn’t even sure if he wanted that Jack back or not. This protective, soft, and sweet Jack was confusing the hell outta him.

Jack

When he’d seen that panic in Zero’s eyes, like he’d done something wrong, all he’d wanted to do was wrap him up in his arms. Keep him safe. He was starting to like the guy. Hell, he’d wanted to comfort him. Had wanted to kill for him.

He’d known from the way Zero had reacted. He should’ve known the whole damn time. Zero was a protector. That foster father would have seen it too. Would’ve taken advantage of it. Zero would’ve done whatever that bastard wanted him to in order to protect the other kids.

He figured that was why he’d snapped when he found out about his sister.

He didn’t blame him. Not one fucking bit.

He wasn’t sure what the hell was going on with him. The last thing he needed was a distraction and Zero was becoming a very big one at that because he couldn’t stop thinking about him. His focus needed to be on getting back into King’s good graces. That, and he needed to find a way to get Gillies off his back.

He had to give Milo a call.
