“You hurt?” Zero asked, panic in his voice.

“I’m fine. Are you?”

He pushed Zero gently off him so he could check for himself, not convinced Zero would tell him if he was hurt.

He ran his hands over Zero’s chest, then moved so he could reach Zero’s back and check that too.

“I’m fine, Jack.”

That didn’t make him stop.

Zero turning and grabbing his hands did, though. He brought Jack’s hands to his lips and gave the palm of one a kiss.

“I promise,” Zero said.

A breath of relief passed his lips and he gave Zero a nod. Zero looked uncertain for a few seconds before he released Jack’s hands.

He felt compelled to put his mouth on Zero so he did. It was a quick but reassuring kiss and the way Zero’s shoulders dropped told him he wasn’t the only one who’d been worried for the other.

He got out of bed and Zero followed.

They walked to the shattered window and looked out cautiously. There was a big, charred spot in the parking lot.

“Is that your bike?” Zero asked.

Jack pressed his lips together. “It was.”

Zero

Someone had just blown up Jack’s bike. What the fuck was going on?

“We have to go,” Jack said. “Now.”

“But—”

“The cops are gonna be here soon and when they find out it was a King’s bike, Gillies is gonna be here to drag me back to prison.”

“I… What?”

“I told you I’d explain later, and I will, but right now we really need to go.”

He followed Jack almost in a haze. He still didn’t understand what was happening.

Jack was moving like a pro. Like he’d done this a million times. He couldn’t have had his bike blown up a million times, though.

Could he?

He’d never heard of any bikes being blown up. Maybe it wasn’t that. Maybe it was because he’d been a King for a decade. He knew how they worked. They’d taught him. He just… hadn’t seen that side of Jack before.

Even with the confusion and fear he felt, watching Jack like that still got him a bit hot under the collar. He wasn’t sure which he liked more: Jack in control or Jack out of control. Both were pretty damn hot.

Jack dragged him out of the room after they’d gotten dressed and down the hall to the front door. He grabbed Zero’s keys and their helmets, pushing them into Zero’s arms. He clumsily grabbed and held them to his chest while Jack pulled open the door with his gun at the ready.

Just like that, all thoughts of Jack’s hotness evaporated. Not because he stopped being hot—he wasn’t sure that was even possible—but because all of this just got more real. The danger they were in was real and it was fucking terrifying.

He followed Jack out the door and down the hall to the stairs, his heart in his throat the whole time. His hands were clammy, and his fingers were in danger of cramping from how tight he was holding onto their helmets.

They made it down the stairs without incident which had him that much more worried.
