“Jack,” he snapped, and when the man looked over his shoulder at him, he said, “I need you to explain this to me because I feel like I’m losing my mind.”

Jack's expression changed from determined to remorseful.

He turned and walked to Zero, crouching down in front of him and grabbing his hands.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Jack

Zero looked so lost. So afraid.

He stood, then sat down next to Zero on the bed without releasing his hold on Zero’s hands.

“I…” he swallowed hard. “Gillies is a cop. We were together for a little while before I went inside. I didn’t know until after.”

Zero stared at him.

“Why is he after you?”

“He wants me to give up the Kings.”

Zero was quiet for a few seconds then he snorted.

“When I said your exes were stupid, I didn’t think they were this stupid.”

“What?” Jack breathed.

Zero shook his head, then said, “No matter how mad at King you are, you’d never give up your family. You’d rather go back inside.”

“How do you know that?”

Zero met his gaze, brow cocked as he said, “Because I know you.”

Why that made warmth spread through his chest he was gonna pretend not to know. It was too much right now. For both of them.

He smiled at Zero and leaned in for a kiss, Zero moving to meet him halfway but before their lips could touch, Zero pulled back.

“Why would Gillies blow up your bike?”

Jack pressed his lips together.

“He wouldn’t.”

“Then what…?”

“It was a message,” Jack said and released a sigh. “Snitches get blown up.”

“I thought it was stitches?”

Jack raised a brow at Zero, his lips twitching.

“Someone from prison?” Zero guessed.

Jack nodded.

He lifted his shirt to show Zero the faint scar across his stomach and said, “Remember I said the guys after us was Russian? I recognized one of them. He’s the one who gave me this. His boss wants me dead.”

Zero’s eyes looked like a cloud storm as he brushed his fingertips over the scar.
