His heart was in his throat the second they pulled up in front of the gates to the clubhouse. He wasn’t sure how this conversation with King would go. He hadn’t spoken to King since right before he’d gone in. King hadn’t said much, but the look in his eyes sure had.

If there was one thing King despised, it was drugs. He’d seen too many of his veteran buddies get lost in them, and Jack understood that. He’d known that as well as the club’s no-drugs policy when he’d done it. He’d known the risk and he’d done it anyway.

Zero

He watched Jack as they got out of the car. His expression was shuttered like he was preparing himself for the worst. Like he was expecting it to go badly.

The King he knew was reasonable and Jack had been a full-patch for probably a decade, so he didn’t see any reason Jack should be this worried.

Jack headed toward King’s office and Zero hesitated. He knew Jack and King should have this conversation alone, but… Jack had been out for less than an hour. He didn’t think Jack even knew how vulnerable he was right now.

The door to the garage opened and King walked out, stopping Jack in his tracks. King’s gaze landed on Jack, and he kept walking until he reached him.

“King,” Jack said, the slightest tremor in his voice that he doubted King heard whereas he’d already been listening for it.

King ran his gaze over Jack, his mouth set in a hard line.

“We have pretty clear laws, Jack. No drugs.”

Jack fisted his hands, his jaw clenching tight.

“You don’t think I’ve been punished enough for that?” Jack hissed.

“No, I’m not sure you have,” King said.

Before Jack could say anything, Zero stepped forward.

“King. With all due respect, you don’t know what it’s like on the inside. Trust me, it’s enough,” Zero said.

King’s brows creased as he ran his gaze over Zero. He knew his story. Well, in broad strokes. The only one who really knew was Walker. Sharing that shit with people who didn’t understand just ended in a whole lot of pity and he didn’t know anyone who could turn that into something useful.

King turned to Jack and said, “You’ll have to earn back your colors.”

“Of course,” Jack said.

King gave him a nod, then walked to his bike. The roar of the engine caused Zero to flinch. He hadn’t done that in months but, granted, he was just a tad hypervigilant right then because of Jack. Well, because he kept drawing parallels between them and he didn’t like how defeated Jack seemed. Not that it lasted that long because the second King was gone, Jack whirled around to face Zero, his eyes flashing with anger.

“What the fuck was that?” Jack snapped.

Zero raised a brow at him. “You’re welcome?”

“I didn’t ask you to do that. I don’t even know who the fuck you are.”

Zero fought not to clench his jaw, then took a deep breath.

“I’m Walker’s old cellmate.”

Jack frowned at him for a moment.

“You’re…” Jack shook his head. “Why are you here?”

“Jet thought the Kings would be good for me,” Zero said and ran a hand down the front of his cut. “He was right.”

Jack shook his head and turned away from him, running his hands through his hair while he cursed.

“I know what you’ve been through,” Zero said.

“Like hell you do.”
