He wished Jack would let the Kings help. They could use the backup, not to mention the emotional support of their family.

He filled the two mugs he’d found with the hot cocoa he’d made and walked into the living room where Jack was seated on the couch, staring at a TV that wasn’t turned on.

“Here.”

He handed Jack one of the mugs and it seemed to work in bringing him out of whatever trance he’d been in.

“Thanks,” Jack muttered and took a sip, then frowned up at him. “No whipped cream?”

“Couldn’t find any,” he said and sat down next to Jack, a smile breaking free when Jack put a hand on his thigh.

Jack being affectionate toward him was something else entirely. He was enjoying every second of it and made sure to commit it all to his memory. Just in case.

They’d had some canned soup earlier which, surprisingly, hadn’t been as bad as he’d imagined. Then again, he’d been used to prison chow for eight years so pretty much anything else tasted better. It actually had a taste.

He drank some of his cocoa, then put the mug down on the coffee table and turned to Jack. He put his hand on top of the one Jack had on his thigh and slid his fingers between Jack’s.

“Wanna talk about it?”

Jack released a sigh he could only describe as soul weary.

“I don’t know what the hell to do,” Jack said and met Zero’s gaze.

He did look pretty lost and for good reason. It wasn’t like he could offer any great advice, though there was one suggestion he could give.

“Maybe we need help?”

Jack’s eyes hardened in an instant and his jaw clenched tight before he jerked his gaze away from Zero.

“The only one I trust is you,” Jack whispered, the slight tremor in his voice breaking Zero’s heart.

He put a hand against Jack’s cheek and turned his head so he could meet his gaze.

There was so much hurt and wariness in those green eyes. He didn’t know what to say so he just kissed him instead, hoping to convey everything he was feeling that way.

Jack kissed him back softly, almost hesitantly, but after a while, he relaxed into the kiss, his fingertips trailing across Zero’s cheek to the back of his head.

Jack pulled back to rest his forehead against Zero’s.

“Thank you. For being someone I can trust,” Jack whispered.

He put his arms around him and Jack pulled him into his lap. They stayed there, him wrapped around Jack, for what felt like both hours and mere seconds. He never wanted this moment to end. All he needed was more of Jack because he knew he’d never get enough.

Jack

Zero was busy looking through the still very empty fridge while he watched him from the opposite side of the kitchen, hip leaning against the island.

Zero had managed to worm his way into his heart and he wished he could’ve claimed it’d happened slowly but it was more like he’d been hit with a sledgehammer one day and bam, Zero had taken up most of his heart. There was still a little left for his brother, Ash, and their kid, but he figured Zero didn’t mind.

He knew he needed to keep this man safe no matter what it took. He would have to do something he really didn’t want to, but he had to.

“I need to talk to him.”

“Talk to who?” Zero asked, head still in the fridge.

“Ricky.”

Zero snapped his head toward him. “Ricky? Are you insane?”
