“I just heard from Auggie,” Jet said between gasps for air. “He tracked the phone Jack used to call him. It’s just outside the prison.”

He was on his feet the next second.

“The fuck are you all waiting for?”

He took off running, not caring if he had to take the dirt bike all the way to the prison as long as he made it there in time to stop Jack from going into that lion’s den.

“Zero,” Walker snapped behind him but that wasn’t going to stop him.

He ran past the car in the driveway and dug the key to the bike out of his front pocket.

Heat hit him before he even registered the boom. Actually, he wasn’t sure he heard it as much as he felt it. It was like everything was vibrating at the same time.

He knew he was on the ground. A phone was ringing, or maybe it was just his ears? Everything hurt but, at the same time, he couldn’t feel a thing.

“Zero,” someone yelled from far away.

He blinked and Walker’s face appeared in front of him.

“Hang on, Zero. Don’t move,” Walker said, though it looked more like he was yelling. He couldn’t be sure. Everything was both extremely loud and almost silent at the same time.

He tried to get his voice to work but his lips weren’t cooperating.

There was only one thing on his mind. Only one thing he cared about and that was Jack.

He thought, from the look on Walker’s face, that he might’ve gotten Jack’s name out, but then the world went dark.

Jack

“You just signed a man’s death sentence,” Gillies hissed at him.

He turned his head, slowly looking up at him with all the scorn he felt, and said, “Funny. You didn’t seem to have a problem when you were the one signing my death sentence.”

Gillies clenched his jaw so tight Jack thought his head might explode. That would only make his day better.

“It’s done,” Dmitri growled low, the dark look in his eyes telling Jack they needed to get a move on before the man exploded with that barely contained rage.

“As long as my family is safe, so is Viktor,” he promised.

Dmitri was clearly gritting his teeth but he gave Jack a quick nod.

The door opened and a CO stood there with a pensive look on his face while Gillies hurried to push past him. Jack started toward the door just as a thought hit him.

“One thing,” Jack said and turned back around. “Why did you blow up my bike?”

Dmitri gave him a blank look, then said, “We didn’t.”

For the first time since he’d made that call last night, his stomach dropped.

He couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The second they were past the gates, he typed in Zero’s number on his burner phone only to remember that Zero didn’t have his phone.

“Fuck,” he muttered.

He glanced up and came to a sharp halt. A beige sedan was in his way. The woman leaning against the side of it was watching him closely. He hadn’t seen her in over a year but he’d recognize Detective Lopez anywhere.

Behind him, Gillies sighed. “Lopez. Thank fuck. Arrest this asshole for me, will ya?”

Lopez arched a dark brow at him and cocked her head to the side.
