“What for?”

Gillies gave Jack a scathing look.

“Conspiracy to commit murder.”

“What murder?” Jack asked, a hint of a smile in his voice.

Gillies sputtered.

Lopez rolled her eyes and stepped forward, eyes boring into Gillies.

“I’m here for you. Boss wants a word,” she said to him.

The way Gillies paled brought a tiny bit of pleasure to Jack. If he wasn’t so worried about Zero, he might’ve even enjoyed it.

Lopez opened the door to the backseat and gave Gillies a look that would’ve made anyone get in the car. That or it would make them run like hell.

Once Gillies was in and the door was closed, Lopez turned to Jack.

“You arresting me? Because if you’re not, I’ve got a boyfriend to save.”

“I thought he was the one trying to save you?”

“What do you mean?”

“I saw him. Earlier. With Walker. They’re the reason I’m here,” she said, pointing over her shoulder at Gillies in the car.

“Shit. Okay. Can I go?”

She nodded and the next second, he was running toward his car, already calling Walker before he got in the driver’s seat.

Chapter Fourteen

Jack

WALKER WASN’T picking up. Neither was Jet. He even tried Sully. There was only one other person he could think of to call right then and as much as he hated to do it, as much as he feared the man’s rejection, he’d suck it up. For Zero.

“Who’s this?” King’s gravelly voice came over the phone.

“Where the hell is Walker?”

King sucked in a sharp breath. “Jack.”

“Zero’s supposed to be with Walker, so why isn’t he picking up?”

“Jack,” King said, his voice breaking.

“No.”

Everything went still. Time slowed to a halt.

He couldn’t fucking breathe.

“No. Don’t you dare,” he gasped out, tears filling his eyes and his throat getting tight. “Don’t you fucking dare.”

“He’s at the hospital. I don’t know much except that it was a car bomb,” King said.

A bomb.
