Like his bike.

Fuck. He thought he’d done the right thing. That he’d kept Zero safe.

Instead, he hadn’t been around to protect him when he needed him to. He’d left.

He’d left and now Zero was in the hospital.

He forced himself to drive the speed limit. Last time, he’d gotten pulled over and while he didn’t have drugs on him now, he did have a gun. And a stolen car.

He wasn’t going to risk it. He needed to be there for Zero. He needed to get there.

His thoughts were scrambling, his heart fearing the worst while his brain tried to ensure he got to Zero in one piece. He tried hard not to think any further than which way he had to turn next. If he let himself wonder, he’d just break down.

He turned into the hospital parking lot and threw the car haphazardly into a parking spot, not caring that he was blocking another car. It would take a while before anyone would realize it was stolen, anyway.

He ran inside and grabbed the first nurse he saw.

“Elías Rivera. Where is he?”

She gave him an annoyed look and said, “You have to—”

“Where?” he snapped.

She must’ve recognized the sheer fucking panic he was in because she decided to take pity on him.

“Down the hall, first left, then room twelve.”

“Thank you,” he yelled over his shoulder, already running down the hall. He didn’t slow down until he saw a door with the right number.

His heart was in his throat as he slowly pushed the door open. There was a bed and a nurse next to it, trying to keep the person in the bed from getting up.

“You don’t understand,” Zero croaked out. “I have to go.”

“You have a concussion. You need to shut up and lay back down,” the nurse snapped at him.

“I can’t. Jack is… I have to go. He’s in danger. He’s—”

“I’m right here, Z.”

Both the nurse and Zero snapped their heads toward him.

The bandage around Zero’s head had his heart hurting and his hands clenching into fists. He was going to fuck up the people who’d done that.

Zero released a big breath and relaxed back against his pillow.

He stepped into the room and caught the nurse’s gaze. “What’s the verdict?”

“He got lucky,” she said.

“I got blown up. I’m pretty sure that’s the opposite of lucky,” Zero quipped, making the nurse turn a glare his way before returning her attention to Jack.

“He’s got a few scrapes and small wounds, but the worst is that nasty gash on the head. Looks worse than it is, though. He’s got a concussion, too. You need to keep him in bed,” she said while giving him a stern look.

Jack nodded at her. “I will. Thank you.”

She looked like she was fighting an eye roll before she said, “Good luck.”

He shook his head, a smile pulling at the corners of his lips.
