The nurse turned off the light on her way out which, unsurprisingly, had Zero sighing in relief.

He crawled onto the bed and pulled Zero against his chest. Zero melted against him, fingers wrapping around Jack’s arm. Jack pressed a soft kiss to the top of Zero’s head in the only spot that wasn’t bandaged.

“You scared the shit out of me,” Zero whispered, grabbing Jack tighter.

“I scared you? You got blown up. Because of me.”

Zero snorted, then groaned and grabbed the side of his head. He tilted his head back to look up at Jack and said, “Not because of you. I got blown up because someone decided to blow me up. It’s not your fault.”

“You really are my knight in shining armor,” Jack muttered.

“What?”

Zero looked at him with big eyes.

“Saving me from others and myself. You just don’t quit, do you?”

“On you? Never.”

Zero

His head was hurting like hell and he was pretty sure he was seeing literal stars but it didn’t matter. Not one fucking bit. Because Jack was with him. Jack was alive, in one piece, and holding him.

“I didn’t see the others when I got here,” Jack said.

“Maybe they’re being questioned by the cops? A car did blow up, you know.”

“I fucking noticed,” Jack said through gritted teeth.

He patted the top of the arm wrapped around him.

“I’m okay.”

“Those fuckers are lucky that you are,” Jack growled and Zero knew the threat in his voice was very real.

“What happened? At the prison? Jet said your phone was there.”

“I called Auggie last night. After you went to bed,” Jack said, shifting behind Zero so he was sitting next to him. “I had him track down Ricky’s number.”

“You called him?”

Jack nodded. “I did. He confirmed he was the snitch and that he knew from the start that I was the fall guy.”

“Wait, do you mean intentionally? Someone used you?”

“Gillies,” Jack said, venom in his voice.

Anger surged through him.

“If it wouldn’t take me away from you, I’d kill the bastard,” he growled.

What he wouldn’t give to bash that man’s head in without a life sentence attached.

Fingers brushing down his face had him refocusing on Jack.

“None of that,” Jack said with a shake of his head. “You already got him in trouble by contacting Lopez.”

Zero released a pent-up breath. “That worked?”
