“It did. When we left the prison, she was waiting outside for Gillies.”

“Good. I hope he gets what he deserves.”

What that man deserved was one hell of a beating whereas Jack deserved the opposite. He was going to ensure Jack got that and so much more.

“What happened?”

“I called the prison earlier and I may or may not have been impersonating a certain detective,” Jack said, the sparkle in his eyes making Zero lean closer. “I told them I needed to speak with the head of the Russians and that I was bringing someone aka me and asked them not to mention who we were seeing by name. Then I got Gillies and myself locked in a room with Dmitri Zevtrof.”

He was almost afraid to ask but seeing as Jack was right there with him, he figured it couldn’t have gone too badly. Unless he’d sold his soul to the Russians. That would be very bad.

“What happened then?”

“I got the Russians off our backs.”

Zero’s brows shot up. “How the hell did you manage that?”

“I gave them the snitch. Or at least his name.”

Before Zero could ask, Jack said, “Ricky agreed, and he also told me exactly how to ensure Dmitri and his guys wouldn’t come after us. Not even when they figure out that Ricky’s long gone.”

“He’s what? How?”

Jack shrugged. “Don’t know. Didn’t ask. All he said was that he’d be gone by the time I got there. It meant that I could name him and have Gillies confirm it with Dmitri. I also made sure to record it, so I’d have some leverage against Gillies. I didn’t expect you to get him through legal means but damn am I glad you did.”

“Shining knight, right?”

“That you are,” Jack said and leaned in for a kiss.

“Wait.” Zero moved back, brow arched at Jack. “If you got the Russians to back off, who the hell blew me up?”

Jack

The second he saw Jet walking through the door, he found himself groaning. Loud.

“You’re alive,” Jet exclaimed and threw his hands up. “The fuck were you thinking, going in there alone, you dumbass?”

“Don’t even,” Jack said, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Jack.”

He raised his head.

Sully was in the doorway, a somber look on his face. His expression softened the second their eyes met. Jack walked over and pulled his brother against him, warmth filling his chest as they hugged each other close. He’d missed that. That connection. He’d missed it a lot more than he’d allowed himself to feel. Being pissed at Sully had been so much easier.

“I’m glad you’re in one piece, numbnuts,” Sully said and ruffled Jack’s hair.

Jack batted his hand away and mumbled, “You’re a numbnuts.”

He walked back to sit on the edge of Zero’s bed, taking his hand in his.

“I’m glad you’re okay,” Sully said to Zero who smiled up at him.

“Sorry ‘bout your car.”

“It was Ash’s,” Sully said, his voice low.

Jack’s heart skipped a beat.
