“Don’t worry,” Zero said with a huff of laughter. “This one’s got me covered, and my nurse is a hardass.”

“Good,” she said and looked like she meant it, too.

“What happened with Gillies? Jack said you picked him up at the prison?”

“He’s being investigated in full but, so far, he’s been suspended, and I foresee a future behind bars for him.”

“Really?” Zero asked.

“Yeah. Looks like the CI at the prison doesn’t exist. Or at least there’s no record of him. In general, and of him having ever been there which means there was definitely some kind of fraud happening and then there’s the whole thing with Jack.”

“Uh, yeah, Jack’s gonna need a restraining order,” Zero said with a glance at Jack who was frowning back at him. “Against Gillies. In case he decides this is your fault.”

“I’ll help you with that,” Lopez said with a nod.

“Keep us updated, will you?” Jack asked.

“Of course.”

Lopez wished him a speedy recovery and once she was out the door, he turned to Jack and asked, “Who the hell is this Ricky guy?”

“The Russians called him the Reaper. He had a tattoo on his back of the grim reaper. With wings. It was nice work, too.”

“The Reaper?”

“Yeah. I didn’t ask too many questions, but I did overhear a conversation or two about him. Well, that, and I watched him break a man’s back on his first day.”

“What?”

“From what I gathered, he’s some kind of serial killer who kills bad guys.”

“He’s…” Zero trailed off, blinking at him. “He’s Dexter?”

Jack snorted out a laugh.

“Kind of. Just scarier.”

“Well, I can believe that if the fucking Bratva were scared of him.” Zero shook his head. “I can’t believe you got out alive.”

“Ricky told me Dmitri has a son. Viktor. We made a deal. I would find and use him against Dmitri and then I’d tell him where he was.” Before Zero could ask, Jack added, “I asked if he was going to hurt him, and he said Viktor was good.”

“You believe him?”

Jack sighed and nodded. “Yeah. There was something about the way he said it. I would’ve said he’s a psychopath but… he cared—cares— about Viktor. That was pretty clear to me.”

“A psychopath with feelings.”

The thought of what might’ve happened to Jack if Ricky didn’t have some kind of code made him shudder.

“How come he could disappear from the system like that, but he couldn’t find Viktor?”

Jack’s smile turned wicked. “Probably because we’re the ones who set him up with a new identity.”

He could only blink at Jack.

“I have a strong feeling none of this is coincidental.”

Jack pulled him close and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
